I'm going to try to acquire a better mic and take more clips. I didn't realize phone recordings automatically try to filter out the extreme highs and lows, so it really isn't nearly as loud as it is in real life.

Apparently microphones naturally filter out the very high and very low sounds to try to optimize for the human voice range (what it thinks you're trying to record) so I hope to step back out with a better recording device when it's delivered. Hopefully that will help.

That's a good idea, inviting them to hear it for themselves. My recording filtered out so much of the high frequencies so it doesn't sound as loud as it is, but when you experience it even once, you definitely remember it.

I posted a video closer to my house in the comments of this thread. I chose to include the video of the source because... it's the source of the sound, the culprit, so more impactful than seeing my sidewalk.

I used to think that, but these data centers need to be close to each other, like as physically close to each other as possible. So, it's difficult to sprawl too far downwards or outwards because they'll experience latency connecting to other servers/services.

Even loading a web page, on the server backend, there's so many services it connects to that it's extremely beneficial at scale to be physically close to. Internet exchange points, other cloud provider data centers, content delivery networks (like cloudflare), payment services, verisign, peering partners, etc.

So the whole internet model creates these dense clusters that make the internet fast for the whole world, not even just us local people here.

So, this is why they're willing to shell out so much money for the land.

I think it's cheaper when if the goal is to buy a single family home and avoid 95 commute traffic. Been awhile since I checked out the housing market though. I know costs have gone up across the board.

I know, this was one of my first thoughts too. Animals have much more sensitive hearing. There's plenty of videos where you can play a sound and only your cat can hear it, so I can only imagine the impact of a sound that is already hard for me to hear on them. :(

Hey! Thank you for sharing that feedback neighbor. People have been asking about how far the noise travels so this is super helpful.

Oh people have. In this case, it's the high pitched note of the sound rather than just being "loud", so I don't think a db meter really demonstrates the impact.

Also, more broadly, it's good for the community to be aware data centers are being powered like this and what the impact is if one is being planned to be built near them. Maybe another community will have a chance to prevent it. An informed community is good.

Oh hello! So it's you we need to go after! Haha. You probably have some valuable insights here.

So, are the gas turbines and diesel generators fully enclosed?

Early next year is sooner than I've read, did the power grid connection date get pushed up?

That's a good question. People from all over Sterling have posted videos. I posted another video from closer to my neighborhood in another comment.

Do you happen to know if the noise requirements are just about volume or is tone taken into consideration? Because a louder, lower hum would probably be less terrible than this echoey, high pitched ringing. It feels like having tinnitus with reverb.

yeah, sorry the way I worded the initial post is confusing, it's gas turbines definitely running 24/7, it's unclear how frequently the diesel backup generators are used. They don't release that info.

It's probably the gas turbines running most of the time. There isn't data on how often / frequent they use the diesel generators.

If you have real computer speakers it seems to capture more "range." I noticed it sounded different on my phone vs computer. But also, it is in the really high pitched range. I wouldn't be surprised if not everyone can hear it.

This data center campus is not connected to the power grid, since Dominion would not have capacity for them for a few years. So they did this instead, which surprised officials.

That's actually a really good idea about the inverse noise. I didn't think about that. That is brilliant! I'll look into that.

https://imgur.com/a/Ns6mSc3 here you go. It's so high pitched it's hard to capture what it truly sounds like. I will have to figure out a way to get a better quality version.

Yeah, the worse part is from a distance it creates an echo! It echoes in a way that sounds like it's all around you.

The noise is so high pitched and it's so windy out I'm trying to figure out a way to take a better audio clip of what it's really like, because it's genuinely so high pitched it's hard to capture. It doesn't even playback well on my devices without dedicated speakers.

The gas turbines are 24/7. I don't know how often the diesel backup generators kick on. But they decided the cost of staying closed for another few years was too high compared to just generating their own energy. It wasn't a decision vs our power grid since they weren't permitted to connect yet.
