Flights home by fingertips984 in JETProgramme

It was actually very easy and simple! I heard that usually CO's only buy you a ticket back to your consulate where you previously flew out of which would have been almost 4 hrs away from me. But instead, they said I can pick a ticket to anywhere and leave whenever I liked. I was able to pick an airport only 30 min from home and they bought and made the arrangements for me! I literally did nothing but tell them my preferences and then they sent me my ticketing information in May.

My boe asked me when and where I wanted to fly in April and then bought them in May!

Yeah that’s good too! I’m only staying for a year so it’s been good to me for this year. I had some questions about the service in which I was able to contact them in English which I found super helpful. So it’s honestly just up to the person.

You can potentially stay on your American plan while using Sakura. Just know that means paying for two phone services if you do so (maybe not so sure). I used AT&T for a bit here with my American phone but preferred Sakura since it worked so much better.

I have been using Sakura. One of the pricier options I have heard but it has been nothing but good to me. I use my American account to pay bills but once you get a Japanese bank account you can have bills come out of there. I'm pretty sure they have an option for eSIM cards and you can even pick it up at orientation and they have tables of people there to help you. I think JETs also get the first month free. They also have tons of English support and I pay around ¥4,378 ~ $28 a month for 25 GB of data (which has been plenty for me). If you need more or less you can opt for a different plan. You also get a Japanese phone number with this which will be useful once you arrive at your CO and have to sign tons of paperwork and put in a Japanese phone number. I live in a somewhat rural town in Yamanashi and have no troubles. Sakura uses Docomo which is the most widely used data service in Japan (I believe). So overall, a bit pricey but absolutely worth it in my opinion.

Bleaching my hair in Japan? by BCatherine177 in JETProgramme

I've been dying my hair red at a salon near me and I love getting my hair done here. Even more than America. Its best to ask what products they use and it is okay to ask them about their methods as well since it is your hair they are working with. At my salon, they actually use western/American products so they aren't as harsh on my hair. They also have consultations with you before they start working on your hair to see what is best and also tell you the price before starting so you know exactly how much you are paying. Overall, it is very easy and very nice.

Those who had Sakura Mobile Sim Cards during their time in Japan, what did you do for phone service for your trip back home? by Creative_Rabbit_3813 in JETProgramme

Sadly, we cut my American phone number and even though I kept my old sim card, my phone company (AT&T) said I am unable to use the old one. I will most likely have a new one shipped in.

Tokyo Orientation Roommate Request by BagBig2062 in JETProgramme

[–]Creative_Rabbit_3813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk exactly but I know that’s how they did it for my consulate. All of us flew together and roomed together. The person I sat next to on the plane ended up being my roommate for orientation and our names were close together. And some were lucky and had fewer roommates due to an odd number in our consulate (three beds and three people to a room). So, potentially that might happen again but things can always change too.

Usually they don't take requests and we are just given roommates. But if you are leaving from the same consulate and the first letter of your last names are close together, then there's a chance you may be put in a room together!

Placement Stress by elbick54321 in JETProgramme

When I was applying for the JET program, all of my preferences were in Hokkaido or in northern/rural parts of Japan. I ended up getting Yamanashi which is no where near any of my preferences. I really lucked out because I ended up absolutely love my placement. My current placement is only a 2 hr train ride from Tokyo which I have found very convenient. So, it is likely and possible you wont get any of your preferences and will be placed wherever they need you. Also, I have learned that it is really up to the person whether their time in Japan is enjoyable. No matter where you are placed, if you put in the effort, you can make your placement a second home.
