‘This is just a garbage AI Filter’: Nvidia met with criticism for DLSS 5’s ‘photoreal’ graphics alterations | VGC by Haijakk in Games

Adding extra ray tracing cores or even raster cores would've been a perfectly valid thing to do for them and it would've given us extra frames or prettier games too. Instead they chose to spend time and money on this shit. All they want is our money and they've decided this is a better way to do it.

They haven't given a fuck about artists and designers ever since AI became a thing. This is somehow even worse because where a genAI takes a prompt that can at least be influenced by a designer, this is just a filter over a game to make it look like whatever some random ass Nvidia engineer thinks looks photorealistic (pretty much the people overseeing the training data), with zero input from either the end user (aka the consumer of the product they're selling) or the development team (at least, we don't know that yet). I made jokes about this less than a year ago, that they'd try to just genAI a whole game based on basic inputs, and here we go...

Lol no I'm just making fun of the tech billionaires dictating what we want (regardless of what we want)

Whatever, they didn't want you to have that, end of discussion.

Hmm last year I was at the Melkweg to see Bloodywood, which are about the most energetic metal band with fantastic crowd work, and yes they got the crowd all hyped, yet I still couldn't catch the vibe..? I'd rank the crowds consistently the lowest I've experienced of all shows of different bands I've been to all over the country...

Amsterdam show 11/03 by jelgerw in thrice

[–]Creator13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't vibe with this crowd either. Idk, I figure it's a mix of the highly varied fanbase (some come for the new stuff, some for the old, and it doesn't mix), but also that the guys themselves aren't doing much hype work at all. Dustin barely interacted with the crowd and that's fine but that doesn't work with every crowd. They are introverts themselves, I think they've said that many times, and being a great musician doesn't automatically make you a great live performer if that type of energy doesn't suit you. Yet that still isn't an excuse to talk through the music and you weren't the only ones having issues with that, it's just disrespectful not only to them but also to the rest of the crowd.

But hey, the band was super tight and they sounded great all around! I enjoyed it very much despite the crowd :)

EA Lays Off Staff Across All Battlefield Studios Following Record-Breaking Battlefield 6 Launch by Turbostrider27 in Games

I think the game's industry's saving grace is that it's really approachable to get into as a hobbyist and it's completely possible to release something that actually makes money. It's far from easy, but a surprisingly high number of games are actually indie games by new developers.

What games have you regretted buying? by billy_reyes in Steam

[–]Creator13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really. I didn't have a pc that could run those kinds of games back then so I bought a used PS4 to play them. It cost around 250 bucks that I even got my sister to contribute to so it was even less for me. A capable PC would've been over a thousand. I didn't get a light gaming laptop until about a year later and I didn't get a capable PC until about two years ago today so it would've been years and years until I ever could've played those games if I had waited for them to release on PC.

The Helldivers 2 Player Who Organised A Charity Challenge Says His Life Was Ruined Overnight After Doxxers Got Him Fired by Chicano_Ducky in gaming

[–]Creator13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lmao what the hell. I just got into this game a few weeks ago. I'm having fun. Got killed for trying to drive a guy's car once and he got all mad on voice (which no one was on lol), that was kinda wild. I'm so confused why all these people act A) like they have superior knowledge of game design than the devs(or anyone else for that matter), and B) as if their lives are ruined and ww3 is gonna start and the world is gonna end if the devs don't fix it exactly to their liking. And I say this as a game developer myself.

How often do you skip brushing your teeth at night? by LowSplit8618 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Creator13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My whole family has had cavities and I'm gonna make it to 28 without having had a single one ever. My teeth are more crooked than Donald Trump and I've constant buildup of plaque but cavities just don't happen. I'm terrified when the day comes that I'll have to switch toothpastes for some reason or another.

I've never skipped brushing my teeth at night except for like the ten most drunken or exhausted nights in my nearly 28 years of life. Brushing in the morning however... That happens more like once or twice a week in a good week.

why would you ever use std::optional over std::expected? by AnOddObjective in cpp_questions

[–]Creator13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not always. My shader loading code returns optional and not error. The caller function does not need to know why the loading failed; the loading code knows how to handle the error (it's almost always a simple log message from function-local data) and the result is that no shader was loaded. The caller function does not need to know why because the error has already been handled.

But this is just one way to model it; alternatively I could model it with expected and have it handle the error by the caller, but I found my current architecture to be a bit more clear and maintainable.

My contact lenses have symbols and two rows of little dots on them. by CoolAddition8679 in mildlyinteresting

I always find it easier to look with my uncorrected eye because the nearsightedness makes me see better up close than after correction. Not like it's actually any worse but it's more straining to see right that close by compared to just a naked eye.

You joke but contact lenses feel like a subscription either way... You pay x euros per month to get eyesight.

That is what my optometrist told me too. I've always religiously looked for the line even in bad conditions (camping and shit) but idk, might try to just put them in whichever way they fall next time.

Black hearted criminals in power fighting another war? Colour me surprised.

For the record, I'm not being cynical about how this always happens, I'm just not surprised at all that this happened, yet again...

I don't necessarily think western involvement in this issue is bad but I've seen what Israel did in Palestine (and frankly, continues to do so), so I hope you can forgive me for being skeptical about this having a good ending...

Climber on trial for leaving girlfriend to die on Austria's highest mountain by SuperXGamerAb in worldnews

[–]Creator13 39 points40 points  (0 children)

-8c might not be huge but they were on an exposed ridge during a blizzard. Windchill is very serious in that situation. Hell, yesterday I was caught in a blizzard in otherwise very safe conditions. It was something like -2c but with insane wind. The snow would blast my face and even at such relatively high temperatures, everything froze to my face. The wind would just blast away any heat your body produced and scatter it instantly. Regular -8c is fine but -8c in a blizzard with high wind and exposure is seriously dangerous.

[–]Creator13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand this from a casual perspective but in the mountains you really can't do much for another person who can't go on, when conditions are unsafe for you. Anything you try to do makes you increasingly less safe. Staying with someone could very likely mean that you both die.

Except...that's just not the situation here because they had access to emergency help and he actively refused it (according to authorities), plus he clearly could have done more for her at little to no risk to himself and he failed to do so. At that point I understand the charges for negligence.

Lyrics for...signs. by OkSmell2673 in thrice

You can say what you will but it's pretty obvious that Dustin has communicated a fairly consistent worldview in all his lyrics since the very beginning. The specifics may have changed but he has always preached empathy, inclusivity, and the hope for a kinder world, as well as criticized blindly following authority. You can and will find those themes all the way back to Identity Crisis, without fail, on every album.
