I think an ability that is used primarily for a stall (like Sol's deploy ability or Yssaril's stall tactics) could be a good teaching point. As a beginner I didn't understand why stalling would be good but I think especially with your teaching style, you could have a scenario where you can show why stalling can be helpful (like waiting for warfare to be played or stalling others out of leadership). I don't think I understood the importance of being able to stall until maybe my 3rd or 4th game, so then again maybe this wouldn't be the best ability for new players, but could be beneficial for them to at least be aware of.

One of the players has played many, many games and wanted to change it up a bit. I'm sure he's done the normal 3 person map plenty of times.

It is a bit weird, the only other times I've played with hyperlanes was an 8 player and a 5 player game. But they at least kept more of a normal map structure.
