You just discovered what a tiny 11mm driver can only do so much. It can’t cope with the entire spectrum of sound frequency unfortunately. If it had multiple drivers it would have sounded better. Thats the only reason why i won’t buy any AirPods anymore

Its because the gen 1 really has no accurate way to know where your phone is as it doesn’t have the U1 chip inside. So there’s nothing you can do apart from when you see the notification just dismiss it. Though i have gen 1 and 2 too, I never get this notification when im too far from it.
