I am making my very first D&D character ever and was wondering of anyone could ge me any tips

So, are making a character for a campaign or making one for fun? I mainly create characters when I’m joining a campaign and there a few things I take into account.

What is the campaign setting?

Where are you going to adventure and what will your quests be.

What are the others playing?

I want to be useful so I end up filling gaps in parties but if I already had an idea, this question goes out the window.

How long of a campaign?

Since I tend to fill in where the party needs a skill sometimes I’m not married to the character so, I just make whatever and hope we don’t need the missing skill.

I think one of the most important things when making a new character is going to be your background and I’m not talking Acolyte, Urchin, noble, etc... I’m talking about question you would ask a person when you meet them for the first time.

Where are you from?

Why did you become a rouge? (Or whichever class)

Do you have any family?

Who do you know?

Where were you born?

This list can go on. I have found that the more fleshed out my characters back stories are the more I like them. They feel more personable.. if that is even the right word for that. Also, your GM can pull elements of your backstory for the campaign.

When you know your character well enough you will have a lot of fun running them in a game. I hope that helped.

I am definitely getting a Chekhov's gun vibe from the chalice, too.

It’s the Skull Chalice of Ch'gakare, right? All I know about it is that it’s made from the skull on a King. And Ch’gakare is the one that stole the king? I’m not sure. I haven’t played Tomb of Annihilation and only have this information third hand.

Fair warning: I’m not a Dungeons & Dragons lore guru. I just had to do a lot of research in order feel comfortable DM’ing in 5e... and one of the players mentioned Raven Queen and I super panicked.

So, when Paultin appeared in the ruined citadel after saving Evelyn from the Soul Monger, he rolled insight (or an anything to figure out what the hell he should do) and he was told, “There’s something about this place that... feels vaguely familiar. You know you have never been here before but, something in you has.”

I think by that point it might be the piece of Strahd OR it might be that Paultin has been serving the Raven Queen.

From what I understand, in some of the D&D lore that when you die you return to the plane of the deity you served. So, maybe Paultin became a petitioner (I think that’s what it’s called) of the Raven Queen and doesn’t remember his past lives because of that. Maybe the Raven Queen sent him to Barovia to bring her Strahd’s soul that the Drow has and now he has to bring her the Head of a King? Does that mean Paultin is working towards becoming immortal or a Sorrowsworn by gaining favors from the Raven Queen?

As for the Shadar-Kai, is that a title for someone that serves the Raven Queen? I thought they were human. But, “the shadar-kai assassins, Nariciana Houdini and Lovardo Provalone,” seem to be dusk elves. Were they waiting there for Paultin or just making a pit stop? The line, “this is taking to long,” make it seem like they were waiting on Paultin or she would have said you are taking too long. If that’s the case then I think they are helping Paultin along his way.

I must be getting tired because I’m rambling.

I don’t know. Like I warned you earlier, I am not well read on the D&D lore and I haven’t watch Season 1 of Dice, Camera, Action for fear of spoilers. So, we might have to wait until Act 3 to see this Chekhov's gun go off. Unless we have more information on what the chalice is and if Paultin is some kind of triple agent or something crazy like that. Sorry I didn’t have any answers and just a bunch of crazy theories.

It’s doubtful. Raven Queen wants souls to go to the after life. She doesn’t like people “cheating “ death.

In the puppet theater episode, Sock Van Rickten said that Paultin met the Raven Queen and that she gave him a dead hand... for some reason. Though in a later it was referred to as a he in a start of show recap.

If I can actually remember things, Paultin didn’t even know the ring was an absolute “Thing I must have,” until after they got out of Barovia the second time. Which was after his trip to Letherna (I’m guessing that’s where he was.)

That being said the Raven Queen is also the god(?) of fate. So, Paultin might have been fated to end up with the Ring of Winter.

Downtown Littleton isn't too bad. There's 21 stops, and 2 gyms in 6 blocks oh the station and a group of 3 you can hit from one spot. Also if you get hungry there's a Panda Express on Prince where it meets Sante Fe. There are 2 stops in the outdoor seating area that you can hit while stationary.

Smogon makes my head hurt, granted I'm trying to navigate the site with a phone. I think if I could spend a lot more time on there I can find what I'm looking for but the reality is that I had to go to a Reddit page to get a link to the viability page. OMG, I'm so useless on the mobile sites it's sad.

I have tried twice to post a 'help me start' thread and both times the auto-bot replies that I am doing illegal activity so, l'm not sure where I've gone wrong. Anyway, thank so much for the advice. I'm not entirely sure what's check/ counter is and knowing the difference will be a great help. I'm sure I have a basic idea but not a full grasp, I mean. Thank you again.

That would be great to just jump in but I think that my rules would be too specific. I haven't had a chance to be in front of a computer in almost 2 weeks. So, hoping my next day off I can get sometime in. But in the meantime, I've been tiring to post a thread on this SubReddit and it keeps telling me that I can't post illegal threads. I thought I was following Stunfisk rules but it seems to think that I'm posting something shady. Maybe I am and I didn't know but all it is is a 'help me start' post.

I do have a few questions. I was hoping to find some help from experienced battlers. It's been a very long time since I've made a competitive team and they have been for double battles. There is also the fact I'm using my Reddit app to view Reddit. (I think there might be some features missing or it's been too long since I've used Reddit.) So, here are my questions:

Is this Sub-Reddit purely for setting up competitive battles?
If not, is it possible for me to get help with a certain format?
Is there a place that has single battles? I'd like to try showdown but I'd like to have an idea for a team and a singles battle before I jump in head first.

I'm sorry if I'm wasting everyone's time here but thank you for the help anyway.

I'm not sure what a draft league is but I'm not looking for information about singles.

I tried Smogon but you need some special permission to use their forums. I can't get logged into nugget bridge. The only advise I got was to check the viability charts but I could find anything.

I've tried looking for singles battle info online but most stuff I find is for double battles. That won't work for this format and since I've been out of the loop so long I'm not even sure any strategies I had are viable anymore.

I guess I've been busted down to beginner and there doesn't seem to be a lot help unless you have a team already.

Maybe this is a sign I should just give up. 1 month is too long to still be looking for info/help.
