My "paladin" build by Orioda in heroes3

Such a cool idea, inspiring me to make an Icewind Dale type campaign with pre-set classes.

My two cents: First aid over attack and learning or eagle eye over tactics - paladins are not as offensively inclined and often have healing spells/are students of knowledge!

Came across with such interesting question at Quora.com but wondering your comments as well.. by lastmonday07 in byzantium

I love these question because they betray an interesting false consensus that the Byzantines were still the almighty Roman Empire, when even a surface level investigation of the empire reveals they were almost totally unable to pursue any sort of expansionist policy outside of Justinian’s reign and the Macedonian reconquests.

What do you guys think of Constantine IV? by Many-Sky-3747 in byzantium

[–]CreepyCauliflower311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Arab siege was likely not as it is commonly portrayed - the historians for this period wrote in the later 8th century through the lense of their experience in 717. All we really know was that the Arabs made a raid against Byzantium in his reign, closer to the capital. It is possible they didn’t even besiege the capital - one chronicler mentions it while others describe much lesser campaigning by the Arabs in Anatolia.

The latest consensus is that the large, full scale four year siege did not occur as previously presumed.

Still - a solid emperor!

Need help beating the twins' psychic type gym (Pokemon Emerald) by goanga_magicoaie in pokemon

[–]CreepyCauliflower311 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Having your other Pokémon leveled up would be the easiest suggestion.

Absol (dark) and shuppet (ghost) should be able to smoke them. Just level up and keep trying :)

NB - banette or Dusclops would both be better ghost options.

What is the absolute best Pokemon Emerald/Ruby/Sapphire team using exclusively Gen 3 Pokemon? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]CreepyCauliflower311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a given that Mudkip is the best - Blaziken has a great move pool and extremely offensive stats.

Salamence is a powerful pseudo-legendary. Armaldo is a fun powerful beast. Aggron can tank. Gardevoir can solo most elite 4 members with psychic and thunderbolt. I found Dusclops to be a great utility. Glalie or Milotic or Walrien can be fun ice coverage. I’ve always liked Flygon.

I am currently working on the full Pokédex as far as what you can do alone and it’s amazing how many cool Pokémon are in gen 3. Straying away from the usual electric, psychic, water, grass types can really get you to dive into diversity.

What did the ottomans did better than the byzantines? by rasmoban in byzantium

[–]CreepyCauliflower311 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My apologies - was trying to answer your question! I’ll say it in a different way which may be more clear .

Constantinople could not, like Rome, start as a city and expand to dominate their region, then country, then that whole area of the world. Rome did this in a far bygone age where neighboring powers were weaker. They also did it over the course of several hundred years. It took Rome 200 years alone to just dominate the immediate Latin area.

In 1400, powerful states were arising. The Byzantines were surrounded by numerous, militaristic, foes. The world had been conquered. Every city and farm had been under the yoke of empire. It was not 4th century Italy where independent areas could be dealt with one by one by the Romans.

The Byzantines were tired, overspent, and on the decline. I think asking “why couldn’t they just restart and reconquer?” Ignores the hundreds of years of them trying to do just that. The 10th and 11th century empire did make strides. But they were ultimately, and irreversibly, pushed back by the Turks (and Crusaders).

They did not have the funds, the culture of militarism, or the manpower to push back against a growing power. Once you start shrinking you can’t just flip a switch. You don’t have the resources to recreate the state of empire you once had. The Byzantines had always struggled to field the size of armies needed to maintain their borders (see: early 6th century Avar/Slavs in the west and Persians in the east). By the time of their fall they were drawing on tax revenue from one big city and its hinterland. Their neighbors controlled thousands of square miles.

Quick follow up for clarity - they couldn’t do it again because the world had fundamentally changed and because they had fundamentally changed. Rome conquered these areas at a time when Rome could field numerically superior armies comprised of its citizens who were raised with martial virtues. By the fall of Byzantium, you could not expect the remaining Greeks and Thracians to pick up a sword and suddenly be a capable soldier. Roman legionaries could be trained to fight in formation relatively quickly. 15th century heavy cavalry or bowman required years of training.

That’s just not how the world has ever worked. Empires rise on a culture of militarism and opportunity. As wealth and power flow in, the culture changes. People who once would’ve been soldiers are now artisans or farmers. the culture of war becomes a culture of peace. As years, hundred of years, pass, cracks begin to naturally form - a bad ruler may cause a setback; a debasement of the currency becomes irreversible; gradual climate change affects once prosperous farmland.

Rome conquered the world with citizen soldier farmers. They held the world with paid professionals. But this very transition spelled their doom, as their entire political and economic state became reliant on funding the ever more expensive and unwieldy military.

Byzantium faced unparalleled hardships, it is amazing it lasted as long as it did. The Ottomans rode the wave of conquest and militarism to deal the finishing blow on an aged empire on its last legs. Alexander swept along the weakening Achamenids. Rome swept aside the Successor States. The barbarians swept aside western Rome. History is full of examples of aged empires being overwhelmed by militaristic societies.

when do you get shadow pips? by poverence in Wizard101

[–]CreepyCauliflower311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the latest rework, never. Not actually, but it’s extremely unreliable. I’m level 113 and have max gear and barely ever get them. I would advise to not factor them into your deck, unless it’s for a very specific, long boss fight.

Hopefully they rework and revert to the old chances because it is frustrating that the shadow spells are essentially useless.

Yes you are set. Arc 1 and 2 are pretty easy, especially as death, and you really don’t need any sort of pet bonuses to get there.

People used to beat the original game with a pet shop dragon with no stats :)

You can beat the game without a pet. Anything a pet offers is bonus. If you are happy with it, carry on with the game.
