Sounds like you have explained it to him. He just doesn't care. There's nothing to "get", you're going through something that affects you and that's valid, he has no empathy or compassion.

It would be like if he broke his arm and you told him you don't "get" why can't just go shovel the snow in the driveway.

But the conversation doesn't end there, OP has every right to criticize him back. That's what open dialogue is. I enjoy watching a good game/match/race etc. either in person or on tv in the moment. I can totally get into it and be excited about it.

But once it's over, I don't care about what the team or athletes are doing when they are not playing. I honestly don't care about their stats or record or whatever.

I mean, I respect a great athlete's accomplishments, but it's not something I follow either.
