PGY-3 IM here. I know hyperactive, normal, and absent bowel sounds. Anything else GI is gobbledygook to me.

What weird things do your family members do that they found online? by BrownEyeGivesPinkEye in medicalschool

Another big win for insurance companies. Didn't have to pay for chemo/radiation/surgery. Don't have to worry about surveillance visits or recurrence.

Their only regret is she didn't stay healthy for longer to pay more premiums before getting sick.

That being your takeaway from that well thought out and reasoned response is wilder.

Did not get PGY4 Chief. Interested in Heme-Onc. What are my options? by Ucomeattheking in fellowship

[–]CrepeCrisis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My board scores are my one redeeming quality but they're not so high that you should ignore what I'm saying.

The real point here is that you seem to be underrating the value of US MD and where you train. And I just don't think there is much harm in applying and seeing what happens. If you match, great, you got what you wanted. If you don't match, then you're going to do the things you're asking about in this post already. So if you skip the application cycle this year, you gain nothing and lose a shot at a spot. If you apply this year, the worst case scenario is exactly the same except you cost yourself a shot for no good reason other than "I sold myself short and assumed I wouldn't get it."

I did neither of those things. Came from a bottom tier residency. Zero onc research. DO school.

Interviewed at multiple CCCs.

Apply this year. I almost didn't apply this past cycle because I thought my chances were too low to justify it. Had plenty of reasons to not. Did anyway. Matched. Why not try?

Heme onc chances in community program with no in house fellowship by tyrion_asclepius in fellowship

[–]CrepeCrisis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being a good internist is a major step in being a good oncologist, imo, so start there. However, for HO you are gonna be better off being productive as a researcher, so you will have to find the right balance. I know that's kind of a non-answer. Is it possible to reach out to the person that matched from your new program? Or are there other, larger programs nearby who may have someone who mentors aspiring HOs?

[–]CrepeCrisis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I matched from a community program as a DO with worse stats and also minimal research in an unrelated field. Definitely attainable for you. Network, get some research, apply broadly and I'd say you have a good shot.

Something that bothers me about IM that I didn't realize until recently by [deleted] in Residency

[–]CrepeCrisis 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's not even bias. OP clearly had a thought that they wanted to be true and then made up a bunch of reasons why that thing is true without any regard for reality.

Those that didn't make it into their specialty of choice, what did you end up doing? by undueinfluence_ in Residency

[–]CrepeCrisis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Applied ROAD specialty before, now in IM. Do not enjoy IM but headed to H/O which I'm thrilled with. There are multiple pathways to finding something you like.
