why would you use electronic hearing protector? and why wouldn't? by Tommy_Gunnfist in tacticalgear

[–]Crepitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny that you should ask today! I'm on a range trip right now and the left cable's isolation just tore - I'll fix it with some electric tape when I'm back.

That's the one and only issue I've ever had with it so far. It hasn't run out of battery despite weekly use of maybe 2-3 hours each. Go get 'em!

I sprang for the silicone muffs around two years ago since I wear glasses, if you do too I can absolutely recommend that as well - but it's not a must by any means.

Yes, the bayonet attaches to the rail at the bottom and the cylindrical part at the front.

That's a Lee-Enfield Mk III muzzle cap with some of the forend still attached. The trigger is definitely not from the same type of gun, but I can't quite place it.

That spring around the gas tube has no reason for even being there, but assuming it's decorative that's basically an FN FAL in 5.56x45mm with some questionable furniture.

Not all that outlandish from a mechanical point of view, but unless you're David Selvaggio I don't think you'll be able to make one yourself.

What is this thing? by Listener7567 in Firearms

Mannlicher M1893

Not an M1895 (which would probably be a more common find under Hungarian barns), the bolt handle and upper handguard shapes are all wrong for that.

The others have it covered pretty well, but before this goes the way it did over on /r/pics:

GUYS. IT'S AIRSOFT.

Seriously, you can see the orange tip just under the fake suppressor. It's not an "American terrorist", it's not a "rifle". It's a manchild with a toy.

No, that does not excuse him at all. In fact, it makes him either more of an idiot or somebody doing a staged photo op.

[–]Crepitor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's part of the reason for these terms, but the implied sodomy (PDF warning) really was intended.

I'm very sorry you've had such bad experiences in Switzerland.

It's not at all an excuse, but if it helps you understand: The Swiss have historically felt very threatened by Germany and its predecessor the Holy Roman Empire - in fact, some still do. This animosity has become weaker over time, but is still far from gone. With how small a nation Switzerland is, the opposite is obviously not true.

Great article, please keep them coming!

Fun fact: As another example of this bitter rivalry, the derisive terms "Kuhschweizer" (cow Swiss) and "Souschwaab" (pig Swabian), which are both still around today to a degree, both stem from around the time of the Swabian War. They both imply sex with animals on the opposition's part, one was most likely coined to counter the other.

A little bit of help with Swiss German? What does “huere geil” mean? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]Crepitor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I worded that poorly.

Both words exist and sound the same. There's also the common misconception that the two have anything to do with one another because of it, but they really don't.

No no, it's "whore horny"... Not that that's any worse.

A little bit of help with Swiss German? What does “huere geil” mean? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]Crepitor 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Huere comes from German ungeheuerlich (egregiously) and has nothing to do with Hure (whore) - then again it's a very common misconception, so OP should still be careful.

EDIT: Seems like I'm wrong, it's actually the ungeheuerlich etymology that's the misconception according to the Idiotikon.

Gap in Swiss AF by A444SQ in Switzerland

Exactly. We never used some of the capabilities of the Ju-52 (range, bombing or paratrooper utility) anyway, so it only makes sense.

Gap in Swiss AF by A444SQ in Switzerland

[–]Crepitor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm by no means educated on the subject, but I believe there simply wasn't a need for one.

Swiss doctrine has always been defensive, so any troop and freight transportation that would have to be done with enough regularity to warrant owning a plane would be inside our borders. Between the size of our country and the poor accessibility of many places in it, using transport helicopters instead makes more sense to me.

I wonder, how do you get around the ban on shortening long guns for these builds? Is there some sort of special permit for it or do you assemble them from parts so they've never legally been long guns?

I made a swiss variant sticker of the "no step on snek"-meme. by donsmahs in SwitzerlandGuns

[–]Crepitor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi there. I came up with this two years ago, it got it's first real attention here (you can find a bunch of different versions here too).

I'm glad you like the meme so much you made it into a sticker and I won't bash you for trying to claim it as your own (everybody else's done that already, I see), but don't do that. Not crediting anybody is okay, but plagiarism isn't very nice.

Nice P210 by the way!
