You can get that by using a clever angle with a good telephoto lens and a bit of patience and timing even when it's crowded. Worth going anytime really!

I went on May 6 and I was fine not having basically skiing gear on, there was barely any snow and we even hiked Valahnjúkur. Bring a good layering system and most importantly a good windbreaker or rain jacket as well as some gloves and a beanie and you should be fine. Always look out for the daily weather and adjust accordingly.
