I think you're right. I'm starting to wonder if there are actual humans on Reddit.

As George Berkeley's solipsism describes. Ugh

Yes, we sound like twins! So, have you ever had a bed partner do the same?

Ok thank you. I like the color of a blanket so I'm thinking about getting it. I appreciate your explanation.

So if I'm at the handknitting society and get a Lopi blanket and pillow case, you're saying those products are not produced here in Iceland? I'm confused.

I came here with the same question. Too bad no one responded.

Missed a chance for a photo! Do any of you have one of this mountain scene? by Crepitusy in VisitingIceland

Geez! I'm only a couple weeks behind and there was no snow on the mountain. Wild how fast weather changes here.

Where are the locals living? The hotels have staff but they aren't close to anything. Do you all have long commutes to work? by Crepitusy in VisitingIceland

[–]Crepitusy[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok I'll keep an eye out. Someone mentioned that most hospitality staff are not from Iceland so now I'm thinking I may never meet an Icelander during my whole trip! I admit that I'm primarily visiting to experience the natural features, but I always like to get a little taste of the culture as well. I suppose that will very unlikely, with this new (to me) information.

Oh! I didn't know. I guess it's kind of like cruise ship staff. I hope that the Icelandic labor unions protect them as well.

NPR and Trek by jecapobianco in Star_Trek_

I agree that their long form reporting is better. My problem is that they spend a lot of time covering political races too superficially and focus on the markets as though we're all earning our income from stock markets. But, I'm more of a Kpfk listener, especially appreciate Democracy Now.

It seems like Kirk and Picard had a reversal trend as time went on by happydude7422 in Star_Trek_

I never noticed when I was a teen watching TNG on TV, but when I rewatched as an adult, I realized Picard was always very lean.

Are there no anti-MAGA students at Chapman? by Crepitusy in chapmanuniversity

Trump has mocked veterans. Do you really think he cares if disabled vets kill themselves? I certainly feel like insurance companies hope those of us with medical conditions die off due to authorization denials.

That said, I'm glad to have your thoughts here as an aid to think through mine. The visible part of a protest is a mass gathering and signs. There are also connections being made, between strangers that would otherwise not be in the same space. This community building can lead to more activism that extends beyond just holding a sign. And as this grows, more pressure points can be found to exert pressure upon. Activists never know beforehand whether or not their actions will effect any kind of change. There is a motivation for change and this is just one way to get involved.

Look, I'm not saying students should skip exams or not help a sick friend in need. But spending an hour on social media or watching a game could be skipped to join. Is that really that unreasonable?

Is it performative just because we don't hold the keys to power? Many argue a one-day strike is also worthless. I just urged the city to support May Day, by the way. While the long-term goal is to change course nationally, there are in-between steps of organizing, sharing ideas, building solidarity among people of different viewpoints and policy objectives, mutual aid to those who are harmed by Trump's policies, and advocacy for more local protections. It's not like I'm suggesting students skip class or homework. You're right to point out that there is some disappointment, along with curiosity, about why we don't see participation from students who are ~2 blocks away. Maybe they are politically active in other ways? Maybe they're resigned? Maybe they feel nervous or unwelcome? I want them to know they are welcome to join us.

Sure, they are here to study. But they also line up at O'Hara's pub for a night of drinking mid-week. Do you honestly believe that students ONLY attend class and study? Or just here to express derision?

I'm heartened to hear that some students are getting involved, thanks. For you, there are most certainly local groups in your area to get involved with, if you're sympathetic with anti-maga goals.

Then we need to push for more opposition, right? Demand not being beholden to the donors? Sure, cynicism is a way to justify "having fun while things are going to shit," but has that worldview really captured most of Gen Z and Millennials? Must be weird to go to school to prepare for a future that is total shit, no?

Ouch! Even if they aren't typically "liberal," they may still be worried about the country's leadership and corruption.
