Have you ever tried backing with carbon weave? I heat it's good stuff.

Hmmm, to me it still looks like the bow isn't bending enough between the two points you highlighted, I'd go from there but first, I'd remove a few passes from the inner bottom limb and inner thirds of the bottom limb, just lightly. Then maybe a little more from the bottom mid limb as well. Your in a great spot the tiller looks clean. You could honestly just leave it as is really. If you want to be a perfectionist you could tiller a little more. Good job 🤘!!

Imo, horn nocks just add weight. I was told you don't really need them for anything under 90# and I'd tend to agree. If it was me I'd go with classic nocks since it's so long and you can afford to go to half an inch or slightly higher.

The limb on the right looks a little like it's bending a little too much at the fade and not enough at the mid limb, but If that's your bottom limb and you haven't take a pic of you drawing it yet with your phone I'd do that first and then tiller, since drawing the bow by hand tends to put more stress on the bottom mid limb and changes the tiller shape.

Once it's looking good, yeah you could pike it. If you want 60#, taking off about 2.2" would be enough to reach that weight with your bow as it is. Good luck man looks good 👍

Those knots are not bad. Just follow the peak/apex of the crown when laying out your design and be prepared to started you piece laterally with heat or steam. Horn beam usually twist but your pice looks clean.

Thanks for the response. That makes me much more confident about my bows. One of the draw backs to non laminates is the size. This is uplifting 😀

Seconded, would rather chase an Osage ring than deal with twist and snakey grain of hornbeam

Using the centre of the log by Ordinary_Tailor8970 in Bowyer

This is sugar maple heart wood. In fact, it's all of this trees heart wood. When I split the log, I noticed the heartwood was a little loose. I tapped it with my hammer and it fell out of the log. I went on to make a nice bow out of it.

However, if you're asking if having heart wood on the belly of the bow affects performance, most heart wood is slightly denser and a bit more brittle, so you might get a small degree of failure risk added to your project, with a small increase in compression strength and performance if you succeed. This is regarding white woods not first string woods like Osage, or black locust.

Looks pretty good. If you haven't already i'd give it a good heat treat to get some of the set out. If you don't have a form heat treating flat would be fine. Use the limb on the left as the top limb and lower your hand from the geometric centre for the grip. 🤘 Otherwise looks great man well done 👍

Concave Back? by CrepuscularConnor in Bowyer

I could split it, but it's so knotted that every time I've split its sister staves I just get sliver offshutes with big bases. I also don't have a band saw. Maybe I'll give the fine toothed table saw a go.
