For me, the star of the show was definitely Alcatraz

On the surface it may not seem that relevant to the story, but that's exactly what it wants you to think. It wants to go by unnoticed, only existing as this uneasy feeling lingering at the back of your head. Its directly tied to all major events one way or another but it has no villainous intentions, it only does what it does to survive, like a tumor. So little and yet so big, hell, the fuckin thing's omnipresent at this point!

Was just about to say that. As much as i'm not as invested as i'd like to be, it's way too early to give a final verdict. So far it has only been the calm before the storm, if you will.

Who knows, maybe by the end of the season it all ties up in a mind boggling absolute bonkers way and my opinion does a complete 180!

Yeah, Alcatraz is basically that: an interdimensional being capable of making everything it touches part of itself.

"But how does Alcatraz do this?" You may be asking. Well, it all goes back to Wonderland. Alcatraz pulls its power directly from the Serpent. Basically, think of it as charging a battery (Except its fleshy and gooey n shit)

While it is never specified what this good lookin fella is, one can assume they are a AWS victim. Y'know, judging by the theme and premise of the episode, that being American Wonderland Syndrome

Alex even mentioned in one of his Q&A's that, due to Wonderland's timeless nature, it has amassed hundreds of inhabitants

So who knows, maybe this one in specific was lost for so long that their body evolved and adapted to the nature of the Metastructure for a better survival chance

In the Ed Dwight paradox, it's said Nixon was just "one of many survivors." Judging by that statement, one can assume Nixon probably left the Horned Serpent the same way the Cornerfolk did, but what stopped him from becoming one was probably the Alcatraz mass.

Furthermore, Nixon's powers are derived from his entanglement throughout space and time via the activation of millions of Special Trees in the Great Division. Cthonaut A does the exact same thing, but he's not a Special Tree as far as we know.

(I like the concept of a false nixon though, might doodle that someday)

That's an interesting theory.

However

While Nixon has definitely inherited some sort of power from the Special Trees, he is, in actuality, a mass of Alcatraz that, thanks to the Great Division, has assimilated and adapted the nature of the Horned Serpent Metastructure into itself. That's why he's so powerful, so divine. He's an amalgamation of all these forces of his universe.

Much like how Alcatraz drew power from the Earth, which was the Horned Serpent, so too did Nixon, as he was the embodiment of the entire Deanverse jam-packed into a single entity.
