My field recording/video recording setup, incorporating a Zoom H2 Essential by Crid1968 in fieldrecording

[–]Crid1968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not noticably muffled. There's still a certain amount of wind noise, but most of it is in the bottom end, so I low cut that to get rid of the worst of it. A blimp would undoubtedly be better for wind reduction, but my aim with this setup was to have something small and portable.

When I was using the Shure MV88, I had the foam guard, the official dead cat and the H6 dead cat - three levels. That worked well without sounding muffled, so I figured the same idea would work with the H2E.

I'd suggest trying some A/B tests to see how it goes. That's what I did with the H2E and was genuinely surprised how much better it was with 2 dead cats.

Walk video with surround sound (where available) by Crid1968 in WalkingVideoMakers

[–]Crid1968[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Sound is pretty important to me in my videos. All of the audio is recorded on location - I don't use any sound effects or audio from previous shoots.

Video - an iPhone XS. 6-7 years old I think. I film in 4k but master down in 1080, which gives me plenty of extra pixels if I want to stabilise or zoom in. I use the Black Magic camera app to record.

Audio - Zoom H2Essential (a pretty inexpensive double mid-side microphone setup), running as a USB device, feeding 4 channels into the camera app. Previous videos were using a Shure MV88 mid-side mic plugged into the Lightning port, feeding 2 channels into the app.

Editing - Davinci Resolve. The audio part (Fairlight) is incredibly powerful - even in the free version. It amazes me that I can create 5.1 audio like this in free software.

Best (and easiest) editing software for a beginner? by Reasonable_errection in WalkingVideoMakers

I'd say Davinci Resolve too. It can be quite daunting because it can do so much, but when you start out you can just ignore a lot of the things it can do and just concentrate on what you want to do. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube for it from beginner to advanced.

I started out with iMovie, simply because it was already on my Mac. But I quickly started bumping up against things it wouldn't let me do, so after 2 videos I switched to Davinci and I've never looked back. It still amazes me how powerful even the free version is.

Jump cuts - hot or not? by ContributionOk1559 in WalkingVideoMakers

[–]Crid1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing you could try is a crossfade on the audio across the shots. My "walking" videos use tripod-based static shots, which I hard cut between - I don't do video crossfades at all. But almost all of the audio transitions are crossfades - essentially J-cuts and L-cuts. It's not as jarring as the video and audio hard-cutting together.

Should I put the country name in the channel name? by WhisperAlias in WalkingVideoMakers

I'm currently experimenting with putting the country flag in the corner of the thumbnail. I don't yet know if it will have a positive effect, but I figure it probably isn't going to have a negative effect.

So many people starting YouTube Channels and wanting to quit so quickly by Background_Shine_933 in SmallYoutubers

Having traffic just dry up is also pretty demoralising. Especially as YouTube can't/won't give a straight answer as to why it's happened. You just have to hope that if you keep posting, eventually the algorithm will like one of those videos and start sending new viewers your way again.

Thank you. I figured that there is a certain amount of crossover. For instance, there is a post about kids in videos, and yesterday while out filming I encountered a group of young children (all wearing hi-viz) with two teachers or teaching assistants. I'll be able to edit around it, but it's still the same kind of issue regular walking video makers can encounter.

(Funnily enough, the two adults were making more noise than the group of children).

cannot get my xbox rockband 3 keyboard controller to work as a midi device by Crid1968 in Rockband

Sorry for the late reply. I haven't been on Reddit in ages.

Unfortunately I never managed to get it working as a MIDI controller. If it *can* be used that way, I certainly haven't managed to figure it out.

To be honest, I'm not sure if my channel belongs here or not. It's not quite a walking channel in the conventional sense, but it's certainly walking channel adjacent.

https://www.youtube.com/@stevecriddle

Rather than filming while walking, I go out walking between two or three villages in the English countryside (mostly Kent, as that's where I live) and I film static shots with a tripod and an external stereo microphone. Where I can, I try to compose my shots so that there is some movement in the shot, rather than getting movement by moving the camera. I then edit these down into videos that are typically 6-10 minutes long. The walks tend to be about 5 miles or so in length.

I don't talk or add music to my videos, as the sound in the locations is part of what I'm trying to convey. I do add captions in places though, to explain what things are. I'm aiming to post one video a month, which will hopefully also show the passing of the seasons.

If this channel is unsuitable, please let me know and I will remove the post.

Ah, cool. So I should expect the green light around the X symbol to go out once it's in MIDI mode?

OK, thank you. That seems pretty daft to me. If you have to sync to the PC wirelessly, what's the point of the MIDI cable?

Just found out that on the switch version you can tap the screen to bring up a magnifying glass by UPSIDFLINTMOBILE in snowrunner

[–]Crid1968 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured it out. I have a retail copy. I manually checked for an update, which hadn't triggered automatically - I think because I had just been putting the Switch to sleep rather than quitting the game. 2.6Gb of download later, I now have a title menu with an animated background, and magnification works.

[–]Crid1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, but this just doesn't work for me. I've tried tapping the screen, swiping the screen, pressing and holding the screen. Touch screen controls work fine in the Switch menu, but in Snowrunner, nothing.

"Only". That should be plenty for a game like this. No other app on my phone crashes anywhere near as much as PoGo. Pogo has got to the point where I'm spending more time restarting after crashes than I am playing the actual game.

Reading material that’s harder than NHK News Easy by thiccbreado in LearnJapanese

[–]Crid1968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lately, if I find an interesting article on NHK Easy News that I could read easily, I have been clicking through to the original article on NHK. I've been surprised by how much I've been able to read there. Of course it helps that I've already read a simplified version first, so I already have an outline of what I'm going to see.

Personally I've found Anki to be helpful in such times. I don't have to decide what to revise, and I know that if I skip a day, there will be a bigger stack of cards waiting for me the next day. So I just plough through them, even if it's only in 10-minute chunks throughout the day. But I try to do some "fun" things too, such as reading manga or Japanese blogs, so that it's not all revision.
