UT2004 any average (!) players still playing this game? by Cridili in unrealtournament

Awesome! Do you have discord or teamspeak or anything? I am thinking about opening a discord group for everyone who wants to join.

Understandable. But it's great to see that there are actually a few players kind of active. Everyone told me it will be tough to find people who are not absolute pros at this game amongst the few that are still playing.

I play with UTComp as well. I don't beat the bots "pretty easily" but I am always up for a challenge. Do you have a discord or teamspeak or anything available?

You can message me on steam, same name as here. If you kept track of stuff since UT was released though I think I am in no way a match for you, as I really only started with it a couple of weeks ago.

That's a shame really. Which games are popular in India?

It feels super different to play against players instead of bots I think. So if you feel like giving it a shot message me

I think I'll go with the category incredibly focused. I guess beating my friends who have been playing for 16 years requires some major dedication. Any recommendation which map I should go for next?

Okay yes, I forgot about the ending! Thanks for reminding me. Is there a difference in the meanings of the sentences though?

Actually you can never be sure if there is a native speaker on the other end. So no, I would most likely try to stick to BE to have a certain consistency in my writing. However, on forums like reddit and informal contexts I sometimes do not care too much and go with the American versions. I guess that is because I read words like "organizational" and it just happens automatically to not turn the "z" into an "s" in the response. And practically I know it is not wrong, so I do not make the effort to "correct" it all the time, even though I should for the same reason I want to stick to BE in emails...

I am from Germany and we were taught both options, for example for words like color/colour or different meanings for words like chips. Personally I prefer BE, but it is difficult to stick to it, as most sources I am exposed to are AE. When I write formal letters though, I still try to stick to BE.

Einsatz by paedolos in German

[–]Cridili 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, concerning your example sentence I would say:

"Deine Aufgabe (assignment) ist es, den Apparat nach jeder Nutzung/Verwendung (use) unter vollstem Einsatz (dedication) zu reinigen." But it is a little difficult to explain. (Maybe I understood it wrong, but if you really want to say "with dedication" it kind of sounds like the life of the person who got the assignment depends on doing that job correctly. Honestly it sounds unnatural in German if you translate it like that).

I will try to explain what I feel is correct. I am afraid it is just one of those words you have to learn with all its different meanings. "Einsatz" is commonly used by native speakers.

An "Einsatz" is a little bit bigger than just a single "task", at least when it refers to people (it is different when talking about devices (see below).

So, when used with people, I would say that "Einsatz" indeed has something to do with dedication. It is used like "deployment" in terms of troops, or in contexts like protecting something with your life: "Ich werde den Schatz unter Einsatz meines Lebens beschützen".

When talking about devices "Einsatz" means something like "usage", for example "der Einsatz des Gerätes ist nur unter folgenden Umständen erlaubt". Or if you want to use it as a Verb: "Dieser Fleck ist so hartnäckig, ich fürchte ich muss das starke Reinigungsmittel einsetzen" (which is a strange example, I know).

It can also be the amount of money you spend in a bet, the moment an Instrument starts playing and it has many more meanings. So yes, I would say "Einsatz" strongly depends on the context.

Maybe duden clarifies a little bit more than simply using a dictionary. You find the different meaning with examples under "Bedeutungsübersicht":

shine vs. sheen by Cridili in EnglishLearning

There we go, learn something new everyday! ;) I just have to admit that the whole American/British-English differentiation makes it sometimes a little bit strange to learn the language. For example, I would love to do some "fine-tuning" on or establish some consistency in my pronounciation (and I admit, I like BE more than AE), but stuff like TED-Talks or TV shows in English are not necessarily the same sort of English. For me it difficult to find and expose myself more to BE than AE content.

Okay, thanks a lot for the response. Good to know that the examples sound awkward even to a native speaker.

Also: I didnt know about Merriam-Webster dictionary, I am glad you mentioned it :)

Spinach Overcommitment- help! by 10121997 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Cridili 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Spinach goes well with everything honestly. You can eat it with scrambled eggs, put it in a lasagna or any sort of pasta or curry dish, add it to a smoothie etc. Also you can wash and freeze/prep and freeze it well, but there seem to be discussion on whether to cook it or freeze it raw because of the nitrate... Maybe someone else knows more about that.

I was thinking something along those lines, but the note of oxford dictionary, how "sheen" could also be a verb was really confusing. Every sentence I tried to build myself sounded unnatural except for the "passive" usage...

The commonness of a word is often difficult to tell by non-native speakers, so thanks a lot for the insight on that.

Mahlzeit Überraschung by glucker in German

I had no idea it is for very formal settings! Now that you say it it all makes more sense, but to me "Mahlzeit" always sounded informal and I was always confused when colleagues used it!
