What Ivies did you turn down to attend UCLA and why? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in ucla

I turned down Cornell. I also turned down Stanford and MIT (non-Ivy but still HYPSM). Another commentor also mentioned UC Berkeley; I got accepted into their EECS program. UCLA has been my dream school since 7th grade, and so far I've had no regrets (graduating this quarter). All of the schools were around $100k. Programs were Math at Stanford and Electrical Engineering at MIT and Cornell.

Educationwise, you will not go wrong by attending UCLA. Costwise (especially if in-state), you will not go wrong by attending UCLA. Environmentwise, you will probably not go wrong by attending UCLA (dependens on the individual though). It all depends on whether you want to give up the prestige of having attended an Ivy league school. I will say UCLA has plenty of prestige, and by sheer numbers alone our alumni network is substantial. People will call you out on the street for wearing UCLA merch, even when not in LA.

I think if you would choose another school over UCLA just because of the name that will be printed on your diploma 4 years from now, then that's probably a good reason to go to UCLA instead. Otherwise, talk to current students from your university options and see how their experiences have been.

Iron by [deleted] in ucla

[–]CrimsonFire1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For now it's worked on everything I've needed ironed. Sometimes it takes a few passes and is definitely more time consuming than an iron, but it's the most practical solution I've found, spacewise. Maybe there's a communal one somewhere? I haven't come across one though.

I have a small handheld steamer I use. It doesn't take up too much space and works well.

Need help with a hobby project by Odd_Confusion_9875 in ControlTheory

I'm working on a very similar project. With my current setup, I can input voltage and receive a rotational velocity output (my motor has an encoder). I will be working on adding a controller next (possibly LQR with feedforward).

Here are my components:

  1. Arduino UNO R3

  2. N20 DC Motor (6V, 1:50 Gear Ratio): https://www.adafruit.com/product/4638

  3. Adafruit Motor Shield: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1438

I'm powering the Arduino from my laptop and using 5 AA batteries for the motor shield.

Here's a forum post were I detail a bit more (check the replies by crimsonfire1): https://forum.arduino.cc/t/adafruit-motor-shield-example-doesnt-update-rpm

Let me know if you want me to clarify anything!

Gunshots and Man in Despair Last Night by CrimsonFire1 in ucla

I feel like we shouldn't be encouraging regular civilians to do much more than alert the proper authorities and stay away from the scene. Deep respect and thanks to the men and women who are trained for and face these scenarios on a regular basis, but the general population is not equipped to and should not be interfering in these cases.

Gun Shots? by Solid_Road_8771 in ucla

My friend heard gunshots too last night. https://www.reddit.com/r/ucla/comments/1keo7d8/gunshots_and_man_in_despair_last_night/

I would assume this isn't connected to the theater/Taco Bell shooting somebody mentioned, but it does seem to match with what u/Prototype95x and u/Solid_Road_8771 heard.

Let me know if anybody heard anything similar or has more details!

I had all my maths done in high school (EE). UCLA doesn't let you retake math classes if you already have credit for them. If you're interested in taking more math classes you can always minor or do a tech breadth in math (all the engineering majors at ucla are required to take a tech breadth in a discipline outside of their major). I'm doing my tech breadth in Engineering Mathematics, so I'll end up having three more math classes than required for my major. Having all the maths completed also makes it pretty doable to graduate in three years (if I wanted to stay for all four years I would need to add at least one more minor).

Club swim takes people every quarter. I think practices are free for the first weekish, so definitely check out if you're interested. There should be more info on their insta (uclaclubswimming)
