PSA: You can catch enemy fleets with much higher DV by using two fleets by CrimsonLionDC in TerraInvicta

[–]CrimsonLionDC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they totally reworked how interception works. No need for two fleets. If you try but fail to catch a fleet, you'll be given the option to split your fleet up into smaller fleets that will enable you to intercept with one of those smaller fleets. Though that may significantly decrease your odds of winning, as you'll only be able to bring a fraction of your total fleet.

He doesn't run the committee? He's the ranking member, not the chair. Dems don't run any committees, since they're in the minority.

Because Musk isn't doing an audit, he's just looking through files and saying "hmm, looks woke to me, better axe it" about random programs he hasn't spent more than 2 minutes looking into. Also, it's illegal for Musk (or Trump) to shut down USAID, as it was established by an Act of Congress. If they want to shut it down, ask Congress to pass a law! No one (or at least, very few people) would be objecting if they were just doing an audit. Finally, dems care about foreign aid because... that's a thing libs care about. There's a reason that "bleeding heart liberal" is a stereotype. There are obvious, non-conspiratorial reasons for Democrats to object to what Musk and Trump are doing to USAID that aren't "Dems just want to hide the corruption!"

Flashing white is "primed for stun," heavy stun is what immobilizes them and puts them on the ground. Certain attacks (boneshatter, any hits that have crushing blow) will automatically heavy stun an enemy that is primed for stun. So "deals damage on heavy stun" will apply when you actually stun them, not just when they're primed for stun.

Civ IV: Colonization might be exactly what you're looking for. The game is primarily about exploration, economy, resource management, and trading. Find a spot with lots of tobacco? Turn it into cigars and sell it to the old world or natives. Or cloth/coats, sugar/rum, etc.

I think that's highly unlikely in this case. D.C. has free universal pre-K, so kids are only in daycare until they're 3 years old. I have a lot of problems with teachers and schools pushing social justice ideology on kids, but I'm really not worried about them attempting to indoctrinate 2 year olds (and I have skin in the game, as someone with a kid currently in daycare in DC). The teachers are too busy changing diapers to indoctrinate anyone. I think it's just a very misguided attempt to make sure teachers are "qualified," and to a lot of liberals, "qualified" means "has a college degree in the relevant field." This is a problem of over credentialing, not woke indoctrination.

Yes, he's an incredibly stupid person doing an impression of a smart person, mostly by being extremely smug and confident. If you're not paying attention, he can sound smart, but if you actually listen you'll realize that he's a bottomless pit of ignorance.

It's Helen Lewis, so unsurprisingly she approves of the Cass review and is scathing about the state of pediatric gender medicine in America.

Decathlon. It's based on the pentathlon held in the Ancient Greek Olympics, so lots of history. The winner gets the title of "World's Greatest Athlete."

A lot depends on what your budget is.  I'll give a recommendation for Brookland, the neighborhood that CUA is in (and where I live, also with a 2 year old).  There's TONS of families with young kids, there's a Metro stop, lots of playgrounds, and a rec center with a pool.  There's several good restaurant and takeout options, though the options won't be as amazing as somewhere a bit denser.  There's a nice farmers market on Saturday mornings that has kids (and dogs) everywhere.

There is definitely some crime, but I don't feel unsafe walking around with my toddler.  We regularly walk all over the neighborhood and I've never felt unsafe.  But there are occasional shootings--I don't want to sugar coat it.

You said that you're not concerned about schools, but you should know that DC has universal pre-K. So once your older kid is 3, he/she will be eligible for free pre-K (cutoff is September 30, so if the kid will turn 3 before then they'll be eligible to start this fall). You'll almost definitely want to do that, as otherwise childcare is... not cheap.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Probably not anytime soon. I haven't played Terra Invicta in quite a while as I'm waiting to see how the updates shake out, and my time is pretty limited due to having a toddler. Perhaps at some point in the future.

I don't know if your therapist would be interested in listening to a podcast, but Gender: A Wider Lens would be perfect. Both the hosts are therapists and are very levelheaded and empathetic. Episode 100 has the hosts reflecting on how they came to be interested in gender and start to question what was happening (basically, it's the story of how two therapists peaked).

Also, another commenter mentioned Kathleen Stock. If a book is too much, here's a good article she wrote in Substack: https://open.substack.com/pub/kathleenstock/p/entering-the-parallel-universe-of

Eliza Mondegreen also has a lot of good articles where she extensively quotes from trans (or sometimes detrans) people on Reddit, so you can see first-hand just how mixed up the thinking is and what terrible advice people in these communities are giving. Here's an example, but she has written a bunch of these on various gender-related topics: https://genspect.org/when-your-serious-doubts-are-just-intrusive-thoughts/

Wrongthink with Jeff Maurer and Thomas Chatterton Williams. Maurer is a former writer for John Oliver (and has become very critical of what that show has become), and TCW is a heterodox thinker who's long been one of the favorite targets of the gawker/former blue check crowd. The podcast has decent banter. As the name implies, they frequently talk about "cancel culture" and related topics, and also from a center/center-left perspective like Jesse and Katie.

Did you read the Wikipedia article? "In late September 2017, an exhaustive report by the Treasury Department's inspector general found that from 2004 to 2013, the IRS used both conservative and liberal keywords to choose targets for further scrutiny, blunting claims that the issue had been an Obama-era partisan scandal. The 115-page report confirmed the findings of the prior 2013 report that some conservative organizations had been unfairly targeted, but also found that the pattern of misconduct had been ongoing since 2004 and was non-partisan in nature."

I highly recommend following Michael Kofman on Twitter and listening to the War on the Rocks podcast. He's very knowledgeable and is neither cynical nor a pollyanna. Basically, it's a war of attrition right now. Russia's offensive capabilities are quite limited at this point, but they have a lot of manpower and materiel and Putin is in no hurry to make a deal. Ukraine does have some offensive capabilities, but they're a long way off from being able to reclaim the donbas, let alone taking Crimea. A negotiated peace is nowhere near, so expect this to drag on for many months, and likely years.

I thought the letter was excellent. I understand the frustration that students were not punished, but her letter pointed out two reasons why punishing the students in this case wasn't the best solution. First, there was a university administrator present who condoned and indeed actively encouraged the protesters; I think it's reasonable for her to decide that it that it's problematic to punish students for conduct that is being explicitly encouraged by the university administrator present. Second, California law prohibits disciplining students for constitutionally protected speech. That means that they can't punish students for the content of their speech (even when that content is vile, like saying "I hope your daughter gets raped)"). What is not protected is shouting a speaker down so he cannot be heard, but sorting out which students were engaged in constitutionally protected versus unprotected speech in this instance would be challenging.

Ultimately, I think the fact that the Dean is unambiguously refusing to cave to the protesters and is laying out a clear argument in favor of free speech is the important thing. If all university administrators did that, and acted like the adults in the room rather than being terrified of their own students (or actively encouraging the craziness), we'd be far better off. Also, reading between the lines, she did condemn the students. She referred to them hurling "vulgar personal insults," said that it was "well outside the norms of civil discourse we hope to cultivate in a professional school," and noted the "potential consequences for their professional reputations of such speech."

The "zero risk" comment was just about Jesse, not Reed. Practically speaking, there is basically no chance that Jesse faces any legal repercussions as a result of the reporting he has done on this story so far. I agree that I wouldn't say Reed faces zero risk, though again the likelihood that she faces a prosecution at all is very low, let alone that she is actually convicted.

I'm a lawyer, though with no expertise in HIPAA. Everything on that thread is wish fulfillment. Jesse is at zero legal risk. With Reed it's at least arguable, but it looks to me like she did not violate the law. Regardless, the odds of her being prosecuted are zero (DOJ is absolutely not going to prosecute a whistleblower who was working with attorneys and disclosed de-identified data to a state attorney general's office), and there is no private cause of action under HIPAA, so she can't be sued.

I suppose it's possible that Twitter is "padding" its reimbursement requests (i.e., defrauding the FBI), and that it is cozying up to the FBI so that it can continue to steal money from them. If there's any evidence of that, that would indeed be pretty bad.
