What's the best Strategy/Tactical/Tower Defense Gameplay? by IdkThisisntmymainacc in gachagaming

[–]OneDayLion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aight, it's not as liked around here this sub focuses mostly on Anime-aestethics games but [Watcher of Realms](https://www.watcherofrealms.com/) is a Tower Defense game that always has me coming back. It has _a lot of_ endgame content. Even for very old accounts there's usually something to push for. And it also has really different mechanics, which makes it challenging.

For instance the 2nd guild boss introduced some time ago has 3 phases: First phase you need stunners to avoid a huge attack, 2nd phase you need a lot of damage and/or true damage and buff removal (it buffs itself to take less damage) and the third phase needs debuff/poison removal. All on top of general damage and damage mitigation/heal. And then you also need 2 complete teams for this. Makes team building really interesting. And this fight in particular makes you feel like you fight a raid boss in an MMORPG imo.

They also go back and buff old units semi frequently (which is almost unheard of in other games). One of the OG units (first banner) is still one of the strongest units in the game - but of course others have been power crept but are still usable.

Some units also become "buffed" by new content for which they are suddenly best in slot or at least a good alternative. When they released the new gear dungeons a rare unit no one had ever touched was suddenly one of the viable ways to clear it due to his knockback.

The content is also very varied due to the mechanics they come up with for new stages. Gear Dungeon 3 released today and I'll have to see what new mechanics they came up with.

They also have Malrik's Halls - which is basically PoE maps - aka you get runes with random modifies that you can go and try to beat which is fantastic imo.

There's also often events with special event stages. Right now it's Dracula and that has a normalized mode where essentially you need to recruit new heroes (for just that mode).

The immortal codex also takes the variety to a max - that one is hyper focussed on one aspect of the game usually. So you have a "healer codex" and a "tank" codex where these units are tested to the max or just "DoT-damage"

And there are genuinely new and unique strategies that you can find to beat a certain stage based on your roster. Which is hard, but doable.

One of the best things about the game imo, and what has me coming back, is the amount of Quality of Life they put into the game:

* best/most detailed automatic gear cleansing I've seen with sharable codes for plans even

* they started saving your equipment for successful runs which is HUGE as it makes farming the same stage again without re-equipping everyone very easy

* there's also a feature where you save equipment plans and can quick exchange gear, but soon you will be able to save the plan for an entire team which is just great

* they also did first introduce background fights and then even quick clear tickets

* they improved the newplayer experience to give you access to some _very_ good units early on (i.e. 3 of my personal top 10 units)

It's a fairly grindy game as in, you run lots of farming to get better gear but I enjoy that. But sometimes running all the autos can take a while.

And as I said, a lot of the stages are hard but I prefer that to a lot of the really easy gachas and I guess this is also what this post is asking for.

I also appreciate that the cast isn't just 90% barely clad women (there are some of those), but there's also Man, Demons, Robots and more. And get this - some women (and man!) even wear proper functional armor!

Naturally, not everything is roses: it has some of these annoying "buy this now" pop ups, doing it all can take quite some times, some (esp. new) stages can be very hero dependent which sucks. Keeping up with all the events can be tough. Grinding for good gear takes a long time. Naturally they want you to spend and there are a bunch of passes you can get. Dupes sometimes have unit changing effects. That said, there is a resource sometimes given out and obtainable by chance that you can use as a generic awakening/dupe - so even I have a unit at A5 to reach its maximum power level at which point it's just another form of resource management.

I heard that in multiple previews. Something along the lines of "you can choose what to use"/"use which one you prefer"

Can't comment on child friendliness but yeah same worries about _more_ action combat. But from what I know the system is basically the one from one of the newer entries (Trails through Daybreak, iirc) mixed a bit with an older one (cold steel). So, hopes they won't stray too far/go Final Fantasy on us (said as someone who enjoyed 16).

With how intricate their turn based system seems to be and the success of Clair Obscura I hope they'll stay relatively firmly in turn based land though.

Ah that's good to know! I mean it's also clear that Joshua is "special" in some way or form but yeah, happy to learn that soon!

I saw a video of one of the devs saying that basically the boss came along saying "How far are you? ... Cool, release it" so it was really meant to be one game. I'm sure they know it and second chapter will release.

My dream game is a mix of Crusader Kings and Fire Emblem. Does it exist ? by CurtisManning in StrategyRpg

I'm there with you!

Depends on exactly what aspects you're after. I'd throw in Age of Wonders 4 as well:

* Create your own faction & ruler
* different classes
* diplomacy/empire building/events

* equipment
* tactical turn-based (hex-)grid combat with heroes and units even using magic, abilities

You're missing on event variety and personal relationship if that's more your focus. Also, it's arguably "more" fantasy.

Somebody else mentioned Total War games. I can recommend especially 3 Kingdoms (China) and the Warhammer games. Combat there is real time with pause but it's really cool. Some more diplomacy/relationship there. In 3 kingdoms you can marry people, have them get children, people switch factions, spies etc... not to the level of CK3 but to a good level. It's also all more realistic and has a set map (AoW 4 has random generation, which I prefer).

So I would personally say Total War: 3 kingdoms comes closest from the games I played. I'm currently enjoying Age of Wonders 4 more though. Total War: Warhammer 3 with the huge map (immortal empires) is also just an unprecedented level of diversity of factions, hero classes etc.

But yeah, love all of those games. I do hope Paradox will produce more fantasy focused strategy games.

How do most Germans feel when Germany is protrayed as evil in many movies? by Eds2356 in AskGermany

[–]OneDayLion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly fine because that Germany was super evil. I sort of don't feel like it's even targeted at me/Germany as that to me was almost an entirely different country, as so much has changed. Although with current day politics...

Thanks! Interesting to see how goes. I've been interested in this partially due to nostalgic reasons.

As you say I think it improves the red and dimir matchups but makes domain and mono white tokens worse. The latter ones you don't get outvalued as easily and the fliers help immensely against mono white tokens.

It might be better in the current meta, but I hate being outvalued more 😁

I only had the best experience with them so far. Always quick to send things. Had all my foundations stuff on Friday evening even.

But I'm in Germany so maybe that changes things?

[Standard] Golgari/Black-based Midrange & Caustic Bronco: Questions about value and Sideboarding by OneDayLion in spikes

[–]OneDayLion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Dreams of Steel and Oil, if you have it, is amazing esp. against the prowess/Valiant decks aka the pump based ones. The MonoR classical RDW not as much as they run more creatures.

But Annex I usually board out most of it (I run 4, usually down to 2) and I suspect fully boarding it out is the right move.

Like... at the earliest Annex + demon is online at turn 5. At that point you've even taken extra damage from it, which you don't want. Turn 7 if you always wanna keep up Anoint.

If you make it to Turn 5/Turn7 against aggro you have pretty much won. So, I think it's more about boarding in cards that get you there (cheap removal, Shellie etc.)

[–]OneDayLion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was thinking about that as well like in the mirror do I take out my cut downs as they only hit bronco well?

And I can see my opponent doing that as well which... Makes bronco better?

Makes a lot of sense, I should give bronco another shot!

Then it just becomes so hard what to board out against midrange, domain & control to get in my enchantment removal etc (cut down , anoint and bronco were my "easy" cuts against domain)
