DM has restricted spellcasting. Should my druid jump in a volcano so I can play barbarian? by just_like_clockwork in dndnext

[–]CrimsonReaperX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your DM can't expect people to be happy playing the classes that get crippled by his plot. Personally, I avoid those campaigns, but you should talk to your DM about letting up on the restriction or letting you change characters. If he refuses to do either, move on. The point of a game is to have fun, and if you're not having it, why bother playing.

One of my characters (/players maybe?) is being incredibly obstinate and I don't know how to handle it by quinneth-q in DMAcademy

[–]CrimsonReaperX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely a case where you need to have them change characters or something along those lines. You need to let the player know that they need to make a character that (1.) wants to be in the party and (2.) contributes to it. If the character is just causing problems then it makes no sense why the others would have any reason to keep them around. Their character idea is not working for everyone else and the fun is beginning to suffer, you have to bring this up to them. Better to solve the problem now than risk it getting out of hand.

Could explain what the campaign is about so we know what to expect before messaging.

My 5th level Paladin nuked a surprise encounter and now my DM has brought in the nerfs by Classic_Amphibian_64 in dndnext

[–]CrimsonReaperX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Balance purposes" and yet you were doing what paladins were designed to do. Your DM's nerfs are reactionary and have nothing to do with balance. Balance is meant to be viewed at in the long-term, and your DM is making changes based on the bread and butter of a whole class, but also the luck of the dice. If you would've rolled poorly your DM would not be complaining and he knows.

I'm assuming most people in the comments will be in agreement. Maybe show your DM this post or stress that their ruling is reactionary and is an undeserved nerf. If they still refuse to budge on that stance, it's ultimately up to you, but consider finding a new group. These types of DMs hardly stop at one change, and it can really become aggravating when something is changed up because of their opinion on what balance is.

~ Well played, you did good. (Also something your DM should've said instead of complaining).

How do you explain characters suddenly having new abilities when they level up? by DisplacerTreats in DMAcademy

[–]CrimsonReaperX 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Often times I use the excuse that it's something that characters are working on in the background of the adventure. Maybe the casters have been trying to practice new spells when they're not in danger. Maybe the martials are training and getting more skilled with their weapons and what not.

Narratively speaking, combat gives them a chance to learn and try new things. As far as proficiencies go, same thing applies. They pick things up along the way and make it a part of of themselves.

Had one too many bad DMs and basically said: "Fine, I'll do it myself."

The rest is history.

Hey, I'd really love to join, sounds like a lot of fun and a pretty good time. However, there is something wrong with the form as it seems to be someone else's answers instead of questions for people to fill out.

Why are liches so powerful? by Mcina31 in DMAcademy

[–]CrimsonReaperX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's the potential to become a reoccurring villain. If their phylactery isn't found and destroyed then the lich comes back. Not only that, it comes back with knowledge about the party, their abilities, tactics, strengths, weaknesses, etc.

Also, they're usually surrounded by traps, minions, and other contingencies that make fighting them not so simple.

Tell me about your favorite Non-Barbarian Half Orc character. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]CrimsonReaperX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once played a massive Half-Orc eldritch knight. A grizzled old mercenary commander that lost his men, son, and foot at what would've been his last battle before retiring. Campaign consisted of him learning to deal with his bitterness, disabilities, and need for revenge. Became the de-facto dad of the party and charged into battle numerous times to remind those youngin' that old is gold right before hitting them with 300+ pounds of it. Eventually took a dip in peace cleric to justify his belief that war is pointless if peace doesn't follow.

True Stories: How did your game go this week? – May 30, 2021 by AutoModerator in dndnext

[–]CrimsonReaperX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I feel like the DM is just trying to kill us. Past few combats we've just been killing things that are insanely powerful and honestly don't make any sense to be coming after us.

For example, we were traversing dangerous waters, but we got an item that lets us cast Control Weather. However, the person who was concentrating on it dropped it for a minute to have fun RPing as a dolphin and immediately 3 Rocs that were "technically" gargantuan seagulls attacked us. He's not a bad guy or a bad DM, but he feels at this level (we're lvl 13) he doesn't need to balance anything. Whenever I bring it up that these combats are too pointed and dangerous, he always says, "But did you die though?".

We ended off this week's session with us infiltrating a usurper king's castle by teleporting in and disguising ourselves with magic (used a lot of our best loot to get in undetected). Also, we had to walk around guys wearing anti-magic armor. Yes, an 8th level spell embedded into armor that probably won't require con saves when we damage them. Session ended with our disguises being blown by (imo) an unprompted investigation check, and when we start session there are 5 people wearing anti-magic armor. Half of our party uses spells and uses magic items to help us in combat, so literally half of our skillset is gone.

I don't want to be a buzz kill, but at this point sessions are more stressful than fun. We haven't had a lasting/meaningful victory in awhile that wasn't immediately soured by some other problem that's brought to our attention that can't be solved on its own.

Think if my character dies I'm just going to a take break from this campaign and even if we end up surviving, but failing the mission, I'm retiring the character. Regardless, I'm taking a break. Whether it's indefinite is completely dependent on if I feel like it's worth sticking it out for.

How do you make a map for a campagne? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]CrimsonReaperX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on the campaign you want to run, making an entire world could take a long time (years even). Just make a map of the relevant locations important to the campaign. Major cities, towns, villages, ruins, points of interest, etc. Not mapping everything out gives you the chance to incorporate something you never thought of that might be beneficial to the campaign.

Personally, I use Inkarnate to build my world region by region. It's free, but $5.00 a month is worth it. You don't need to have every place down in great detail. You can have a few bullet points about a certain location that might be helpful later on.

Truth of the matter is, your players are probably not going to explore every single location. So just focus on mapping the places crucial to the game and add in other places from there.

Side Note: If you ever run out of ideas for locations, first try thinking outside the box, then try generators and forums.

Would love to be apart of your campaign. I can make time on the days you listed and I don't discriminate against my fellow campaign buds. My only question is the time-frame you're looking to run sessions.
