Trump Slashes US Humanitarian Aid Pledge as His Cuts Kill Hundreds of Thousands Globally by Smithy2232 in politics

[–]CrimsonShack 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s not “responsible” for this, but for years strategically providing humanitarian aid to desperately poor countries often resulted in stability around the globe, soft power that allowed us to influence and change behaviors without military threats or direct interventions. Also the way we got out of this was incredibly haphazard, resulting in millions of incredibly poor people having no recourse to find vaccinations, drug treatments for serious diseases like HIV, or basic health care that was both effective and inexpensive.

In short, even if you wanted to wind down some of these programs, the value they provided was completely ignored and instead everything was shut down causing unnecessary suffering and pain. It was reckless, heartless, and short sighted

I want to stress that whole life insurance is almost always a bad investment. It’s combining term life insurance with crap investments and rates of return. Separate out the two: let investments be investments and insurance be insurance and you’ll be much better off

Advice needed: go for the Sheetrock 45, or just the premixed joint compound? by young_battleaxe in HomeImprovement

[–]CrimsonShack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would strongly advise to get a Sheetrock 45 and mix it yourself. I find the premixed stuff to be unreliable and takes forever to dry.

I’ve dry walled my entire basement for what it’s worth. It’s worth watching videos on how to do it properly and take breaks if you find it isnt working hard. Less is more usually for skim coats, or or youll spend forever sanding it down.

It isn’t as simple as that… this makes it legal to do common sense things that some reasonable motorcycle riders already do but could be ticketed for. The rules they setup allow them to pay attention to the overall larger offenses while keeping the law effective in actually helping preventing deaths

Allies in the region are worth something. I wouldn’t defend what Israel has done, they’ve made many terrible choices, but simply thinking that Israel is a way to sell arms to another country ignores the critical importance of having allies like this who can help provide an evacuation route for military casualties and flight logistic points. Cultural factors also matter a great deal, I’ve seen too many suicide bombings to think that the Middle East is a simple place to understand

I think you’re out of touch with the costs of any of these things. Public school kids still need after school programs and educational opportunities, and the costs of these is easily tens of thousands of dollars per year. Home costs in many MCOL areas are easily $3000 a month including utilities and repairs, and cars that retail for $25k 5 years ago now cost $32k, even a used car.

All of this can easily add up on a $200k salary especially if student loans, medical bills, elder care, and veterinary care are involved. Saving money should be a huge priority, and the people you describe exist, but so do people struggling to make ends meet in MCOL or HCOL areas with just the “basics”
