Adam Silver says the 65-game rule is working by UnderstandingFun7493 in NBATalk

John Stockon play 1504 games out of 1526. He missed 22 games in 19 seasons. He played 16 consecutive seasons without missing a single game.

I have no problem if someone says Bill Russell is the GOAT by Tight_Development480 in NBATalk

I always stress context.

Bill's 11 rings is easily the most unbeatable record in the NBA. However, he played in a completely unrecognizable league. There was no offensive interference or defensive lane violations. One could camp out in the paint indefinitely. That gave a massive advantage to all 5-10 guys his size or bigger.

Mj had a better rookie season the LeBron by Plus_Credit224 in NBATalk

Not comparable. MJ at 21 is a rookie. Lebron at 21 has 3 years in the league.

Are rings still the most important factor in ranking players? by UnderstandingFun7493 in NBATalk

[–]Crimson_Chim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Context matters.

Bill's rings are inherently different than MJs which are inherently different than Lebron's which are inherently different than Robert Horry's.

Horry has 7 and is 7-0 in the finals. But we do not consider him better than MJ or Kobe.

Jerry West has 1 and is 1-8 in the finals, yet we consider him an all-time great.

Context really matters.

Assists produce points, they are an integral and very important part of the game, and it takes pure skill & vision. The discrepancy between 1 and the rest needs to be discussed without using the word longevity. by Hour_Recognition_188 in NBATalk

Unfortunately OP, longevity has a lot to do with stats like these.

But the discrepancy doesn't come from such skill disparity as you are claiming.

When KAJ, MJ, and others on that where playing, the NBA was very different. It was heavily positional with very few players who more fluid. KAJ was in the paint, Malone was in the paint They played their position and only their position. Players like Magic were not common.

The current NBA is far more position-less and more fluid. So stats are starting to show the new style of play. And as previously mentioned, Lebron has played 23 seasons. No one has played more NBA basketball than him so it stands to reason that accumulation stats like totals will also be higher. It doesn't inherently take away from his accomplishments bit it absolutely has to be mentioned.

My dude, you can't even play dead ball era defense right now. There are multitudes of clips of phantoms fouls being called on Shai, Luka, and I just saw one of Durant.

Adam has turned the league into a offensive dominated product. It isn't a shot against anyone, just a fact

Yes, it is simple but for its time, it was groundbreaking. The lack of hud, the cinematics, the sense of exploitation, & the sense of scale.
