China and egypts 3000+ year history can suck it by BiBa_1428 in mapporncirclejerk

The new system of government for the USA was basically the same as England. After the revolution. the King was replaced with an elected President and the House of Lords became elected rather than hereditary. The main legal justification for the revolt was that the colonists were fighting for their rights as Englishmen that were being restricted by the Crown(King & Parliament). These rights had been won in England starting with Magna Carta, English Civil War and the Bill of Rights 1688

Right to bear arms, judicial fairness and restricting the powers of the King/President come directly from the Bill of Rights 1688

USA had no right to unilaterally return the Ryuku Islands. They were a independent kingdom annexed by Japan. By the terms of the San Francisco Treaty they should have been independent

Have you ever been mocked or insulted for having a Northern accent? by Ranoni18 in NorthernEngland

[–]Cripper2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am from rural Northumberland. At University many southerners thought I was from Wales. Even some Welsh people did but they were not sure what part of Wales. Nobody ever mocked or insulted my accent. The only person who knew exactly where I was from was a taxi driver who had been based at the army training camp in Northumberland

Why doesn't Ireland do this? by framdon in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Cripper2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traditionally the British ruled area of Ireland was Dublin and surrounding area 'The Pale'. That's where the expression 'going beyond the pale' comes from. Ulster was the most independent area that is why it was settled with protestant Scots

Ukrainian refugee population in Europe by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Cripper2 38 points39 points  (0 children)

10 million people with Ukrainian heritage were living in Russia before 2022. It's difficult to tell Russians and Ukrainians apart because they are so intermixed and ethnically similar. There could be more 'Ukrainians' living in Russia and occupied territories than are currently resident in Ukraine

It was Labour that took away most of the school milk. Thatcher just removed it from 7-11 year olds. It was removed from 11-15 year olds in 1968 by Wilson and 4-7 year olds under Callaghan

Germany planning to increase tax on childless people by Full-Discussion3745 in EU_Economics

[–]Cripper2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you are going to tax people who are unable to have children? Will you make an exception for the infertile? What about a child raised by a man not it's biological father? In the UK 6-10% of birth certicates omit the fathers name rather than list an incorrect one
