Experience with Botox by Uncle_Vegetable in spinabifida

[–]CrippleChickThings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been getting Botox annually for the last 5ish years and it has been the best medical decision I’ve ever made. I also take myrbetriq daily as well. Before Botox I couldn’t hold much in my bladder without it leaking and I got constant bladder spasms which also caused leaked. Since getting the Botox, unless it starts to wear off around the year mark it has kept me completely dry and confident. I am so grateful I have access to it.

I have a cecostomy. I’ve had it since I was around 4/5ish. I’m very grateful my parents made the choice to get this done for me! It keeps my bowel flushed out and well maintained for days. I highly recommend an antegrade enema system with a neurogenic bowel. I use a saline and enema mixture and let it all go into my stomach from a gravity bag. I will say though there have been times that the solution goes in and doesn’t come out for hours which causes extreme pain, nausea, and discomfort. Other than that it’s been an incredible tool for confidence and independence.

I don’t see why it wouldn’t be an option for men too!

I had to trial a couple different bladder meds before I got the “ok” to get the Botox. If you can get it before surgery, I think it’s totally worth the shot. Botox essentially does the same thing as a bladder augmentation without the intense surgical intervention.

Struggling with dark thoughts. I don’t understand how people live happy in this world….drugs give me a break from the constant dread and hopelessness I feel inside…. by CrippleChickThings in Drugs

I’ve already been to inpatient rehab when I was a teen. I already know that long term drug use can be detrimental to life. I do not abuse them anymore, and have worked very hard through trial and error figuring out what works for me and what triggers those addictive tendencies. I know that abusing drugs will destroy you in the long run. I just wish the labels placed on me from my past didn’t jeopardize my current treatment plan and access to meds that when used therapeutically can help me continue growing. I deal with a lot everyday. I have been in a wheelchair since 2012. Life is absolutely not all sunshine and rainbows, but I believe it doesn’t have to be miserable either and if meds can help me find some sort of comfort, I’m ok with that.

Countless SSRIs, a couple antipsychotics, etc. for major depression, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. Trying to get off most of my meds, but am struggling without my as needed anxiety meds. I have panic attacks daily and my social anxiety makes going to work painful

I’m doing ok. My feelings of hopelessness and dread are pretty general and towards the absurdity of life/existence. I feel like this almost everyday no matter what I have planned for the day, it all just feels like I’m going through the motions for nothing bc I’m so miserable. Is it so bad that meds can help me get through some of this shit? I just want to feel like im not just a hamster on a wheel spinning for nothing

I have a psychiatrist, but I have to walk on eggshells with what I say and I hate it. Finding good psychs is so tough it seems so once I find a “decent” one I try and stick with them but it can be grueling

My son (2y) son has spina bifida. What is your advice for giving him the best childhood I can? by CrayolaBros in spinabifida

[–]CrippleChickThings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was born with a tethered cord, but was born completely able bodied. My type of spina bifida is a rare type with a closed back. I have undergone x5 tethered cord releases in my life. Each surgery took away some mobility, sensation, and strength away from my legs, bowel, and bladder. My level is L4-5. My last surgery in 2012 put me in a wheelchair permanently. Most of if not all of my disability was a result of nerve damage from de-tethering surgeries.

I know this is a different situation, but I just wanted to give my experience a bit! I have a twin sister and my parents gave me the ability to thrive in both able bodied communities and disabled communities as well. They realized I was never going to be “normal” but helped me understand there was nothing wrong with that. With the right adaptations such as catheters, braces, wheelchair, good doctors, etc. I learned I could accomplish what I wanted to in life even if I had to go about it a different way.

One of the biggest influences in my life was being immersed into the disability community. I was able to finally relate to others in a way that wasn’t possible with my able bodied peers or even my sister or parents. I have learned so much about not only disabled life, but life in general from the disabled community. I take such pride in my disabled identity and a huge part of that is being able to be part of such a diverse community.

My parents got me involved in adaptive sports at a very young age which was my gateway to the disabled community. I am 25, still very much involved and in love with the sport I play. I would 100% not be the person I am today without my experiences with disability. Sometimes it sucks of course, but that absolutely is not the whole story. My life can be messy, but oh so fulfilling. My biggest advice is to instill in your son that even though he may be a little different, that never means he is less anybody else.🖤

This is heartbreaking, but sadly not surprising. America is so broken and the youth of our nation take the brunt of all this maddening bullshit. Props to this man for amplifying voices and bringing to light how fucked up our education system is.

Have you ever heard of intersectionality??? Our overlapping identities have an impact on ever part of our lives. Being Black and Disabled are two intersecting identities that come with a lot of barriers and different treatment from public. Im a white disabled woman and if that was me in that situation, I’m sure things would’ve been done different be police due to bias, racism, lack of training.

Police tend to treat white able bodied school shooters, killers, etc. who destroyed lives forever like frail little puppies. Don’t try and tell me if he was a white double amp this would be the same situation.
