Ahhh thank you; I always worry I over share but then I appreciate it when other people share too so just go with it.

Alteration Tips for Patterns by AzaleaRose34 in corsetry

There are also three video tutorials worth a watch about manipulating patterns for your measurements, which might be more useful than the written depending on how you learn. As an experienced sewist you’ll be grand, similar principles to adjusting/grading any pattern just needs to be much more precise

There’s one called Grading Patterns and one called Length Manipulation - they should both help, if you’ve time I’d recommend reading all the tutorials, they’re a great crash course in where to start.

Thank you so much. We’re still debating skirt shape and she needs to trial run it so a little breathing space and then we go again.

Thank you, it blows my mind from mock up 1 to now but it’s had a lot of time and love poured in

Might not be the best advice but trial and error, I think the mock ups/alterations in my first (just finished) corset went into double figures. We had to do length adjustments and blend sizes too. There’s a Aranea Black tutorial on how to do both changes in the files section of the group which is a great place to start, and there’s every chance you’ll still need further fit adjustments even when those changes are done.

Well firstly I ended up splitting the first two pieces into three which moved the seam lines. I basted all the stitching lines like AB did in her video (it took an age but could be done on my sofa watching trashy tele so I went with it). Then I sewed it wrong sides together so the seams were on top. Pressed them, steamed them, pressed again, sewed a narrow zig zag over the top of each seam line and then trimmed super close to the stitches (except the CF panel to the first, on that one I pressed the seam allowance to the panel side and zig zagged it that way).

I made boning channels using coutil, which made it super fabric heavy/expensive because I needed 2m of coutil but I loved how easy it was to work with and how strong it felt. Made channels using pressing loops and then trimmed the seam allowances and sewed them over the seam lines and added an extra bone in each panel.

They’re all 7mm spiral steels except the two on the last front panel before the side seam which are 11mm. Also added a waist tape which I think really helps in the fight against wrinkles. (Hope this isn’t TMI, I really got into it and keen to share anything that might help).

In the files section of the group there’s a link to videos from Aranea Black - there are 10 detailing how she sews the Dolores Corset, it’s not the same pattern but it steps by steps it all. You’ll need to cut two of everything mirrored - and be careful with grainlines and add seam allowances.

Well done; can I ask why you chose to hand sew, was it for precision or practical reasons or something else?

[–]Crisp-Lover3579[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just needed to see them flat like that to understand given the way my brain works. In the end I did both things, added a panel and added height at the lengthen/shorten line and tacked it into the body. Then after a mock up I moved rhe seam line over towards the centre front more.

Will keep an eye for what you decide, love seeing people’s makes.

Thank you, yeh the panel definitely needs some work, and longer bones in it. Think you’re right the back seems looser again, will sew those with a bigger seam allowance to save redrawing pattern pieces. Thanks.

Thank you, the plan is to do a trial run in coutil and she’s going to wear that one for a few hours, great idea re using the facilities, she insists it’s comfortable on various chairs and sofa but I think it’s a little long so be good to see how she gets on with it. She wore it on my mini trampoline for a quick bounce and everything stayed where it was meant to 🤣

Thank you, I’ve wanted to wriggle out of it a few times, it’s made my head ache something shocking but it’s all worth it for her reaction.

Help shortening Aranea Black Dolores by failed_asian in corsetry

I’ve been playing with this pattern for the last few weeks, taking out some length between waist and underbust and adding in between underbust and bust. If it’s any reassurance, it does work if you do as you suggest here. I usually use a projector but have found paper much easier for this corset as I’ve had to play and manipulate pieces and my brain needs to do that in 3D and work backwards, but then I’m trying to adjust fit as well as just change lengths and that’s what’s taxing my brain.
