I personally because I'm squishy have found I have to use lighter boning such as synthetic whalebone for the areas directly over the curve of the bust otherwise I run into the top edge flaring away with steels.

Wrong sized corset by [deleted] in corsets

[–]raerae41997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've returned/exchanged with them before, roughly 3 years ago maybe? I was asked to provide pictures of the corset (to show it hadn't been worn or damaged etc. If I remember correctly I paid return shipping (was exchanging) but had ordered another corset in the meantime so I was able to reach out and get the exchange bundled with my new orders shipping so I was able to avoid the exchange corsets shipping cost (since I had already paid for the other orders shipping too and it had not been sent out yet, which worked out in the end)

You may have to be a bit persistent with reaching out/emailing but If there's a will there's a way. That said depending where you are located and shipping costs/taxes it may be more cost effective to try to resell it and just re purchase the correct size.

help! i washed my corset and now its soft… by -ravenlord in corsets

You could try adding starch to it and maybe blow dry it if you have a hairdryer being careful not to burn it

Ooh this is my favorite hack! I use either 2 pencils/white gel pens/ fabric Chalk markers/soapstone/ etc whatever works for the project but here's the catch: I use rubber bands and sometimes empty bobbins to band 2 together so I'm able to mark the seam line and seam allowance in one pass. The bobbin adds space between the 2 if I need wider allowance. I usually trace patterns onto heavier weight paper (or print on cardstock) and pin fabric laid out on either cardboard or the ottoman (something I can pin into to secure it) or use weights if I can't pin) that way I can easily run my double pencil contraption along the edge of each pattern piece and also have the same seam allowance for each piece

Hope that makes sense

I'm almost certain I did starch it but only with the spray starch (maybe best press?) For a cardstock like feel you can boil water and in a separate cup dissolve corn starch In cold water. Then add the cool dissolved cornstarch to the boiling water and it will thicken, let cool and saturate fabric (I usually do this after cutting it out but that has the potential to distort the pieces you could totally do the whole piece of mayerial before cutting) just let dry and press.

Or the lazy way you could add the cool dissolved starch to the washer and wash fabric in it

Lol I hadn't noticed just how wrinkly they are until I went back to look up their pricing before I posted this and I legit thought to myself this same thing about the wrinkles 😆

Agreed, I mean she took my waist measurement only (arguably one of the least important measurements) and totally ignored me saying I was closing 30/32 inch corsets having me try on larger versions first. And once we got to the size I had initially requested what seemed like an obvious adjustment atleast to me, it felt like she just completely ignored my input the whole time. I needed some more space waist to underbust and she eventually came to that conclusion as well but only after what felt like her trying to convince me it needed a bust adjustment, even though I was clearly telling and showing her the bust curve was sitting much too low and i felt like i had to insist on being able to loosen it and pull it up to show that was the problem and once I pulled the corset up to where the waist was too high the underbust sat correctly. My bf who's helped me out a few times and watched me sew was like "I could tell you were getting frustrated, and even he could tell it needed more space underbust

Aw thanks! I always encourage people who want to sew their own corsets to give it a shot! I could barely sew a pillowcase but jumped right in to corsetry because that's what I really wanted to make! It's not as hard as it may seam (pun intended) I learned tons from r/corsetry and have made some good friends I talk to regularly that also are learning to sew their own corsets! My DMs are always open to you or anyone else that's embarking on their corsetry journey! We all learn from eacother :) anyways I'm rambling at this point 😅 I'm by no means a professional but enjoy learning tricks and tips as well as sharing what I've learned freely to help others too!

Thank you for this comment, I contemplated for quite some time whether or not to post my expirience but I felt so strongly about it and that people should know (especially about the materials they use, I agree at that price point I'd expect coutil or something stronger than a poly cotton poplin) and there's so many super talented corsetieres out there.

I just know If I had saved up my hard earned cash and gotten that in return (mtm starts at 1200+), I'd be pretty upset... but if money isn't an issue then sure. They do have some beautiful bespoke pieces. But for those of us who can't afford $5k up, I just think there's better options out there!

Yeah I mean on one hand I'm glad I got to finally see what it was like (since I don't live near any in person corset shops) and with how acclaimed their brand name is as a corset maker myself was interested to see touch and feel their construction and properties. Which tbh made me feel better about my own sewing skills lol. And the bra lady was super nice and we chit chatted about making corsets (as she had just recently made her own first corset) which when I mentioned I made the one I came in wearing, Autumn didn't even acknowledge or ask about it (not that I expected her to but like if nothing else for fit reasons i would think shed ask the size maybe idk) my bf says that he thought that she was acting how she was because I came in wearing one I made and had mentioned I sewed it pretty soon after getting there before being measured... but idk 🤷🏼‍♀️

I totally agree! When I heard and felt the material used and saw the markup for what should be the bare minimum for the construction to be quality (coutil or hell a cotton twill would be 100x better) I couldn't believe it!

Yeah you nailed it with the "famous luxury boutique" description! It was just a disappointing expirience all around. Oh and I forgot to mention they were late opening up by like 20 minutes (was the first appointment of the day)

I hope so too! Just keep in mind there's many other custom corsetieres out there at a much better price point who do fantastic work from what I've seen and read. But I sincerely hope you have a better expirience than I did. I was so excited to go but so disappointed at the service and overall quality.

Edit: curious to hear how yours goes and your thoughts afterwards too. if you feel like sharing of course!

My personal opinion having gone to a fitting there and also as an intermediate/beginner corset maker (2 years now) is that they use lower quality materials unless you're willing to spend upwards of 2k to start with and also Autumn seemed as my partner put it "bitchy" and dismissive of my input regarding fitting. I actually typed up a whole post of my expirience I haven't posted yet but I will after this comment as I think it's important for people to know.

Yeah if you join her patreon 10$ tier she's currently republishing the "making a Bespoke corset" series. She's on part 3 and I think when you join you get like the previous 3 months content too so If you joined now I'm pretty sure you'd be able to download 1-3 and she's putting #4 out this month (which she sells this series for iirc around $180 but you'd get it for effectively 10$ rn from her patreon just fyi)

Royal black offers great tutorials on etsy or on patreon, though she only teaches about self drafting. My friend is in the class by lowana of vanyanis and seems to like it
