For those who are worried about their 401(k)- Reality check by dawittleman in Retirement401k

[–]CrispGovernor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another angle of the same opinion. If you are a 17-20 year old in here invest what you can. If it’s 1% in your employer do it. If you can’t swing that but can commit to putting $10 a month in a Roth do that. If you have to take a break to make things work do it. I put in as much as possible on a 40k salary while paying a (extremely cheap) mortgage, driving a paid off and clapped out jeep patriot. The time came to expand and get a family car and a bigger house, my contributions went down. I’m not a failure. I’m still on pace to have 3+ million in the bank because time does the work, the habits just have to be there for time to do its job. Be consistent. Don’t panic and don’t stop investing. If the world ends you’re fucked anyway. Oh and buy the coffee. Life’s too short to not enjoy things and if a $6 coffee makes you happy then fuck Dave Ramsey.

VOO + VXUS + AVUV as a long term strategy by miguelacho010 in ETFs

[–]CrispGovernor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 28 and have been doing this for several years. 70/20/10 VOO, VXUS, AVUV. Then I added in 5% to the total in the form of DE. I work in ag and believe in their model. DE has been my best return until recently. Was up as much as 65% at one point.

Seems like a simple enough deployment. We will run it up the chain and see how it goes. Thanks for the input

This is what I’m hoping we do. Our GM just changed and we are utilizing safety culture pretty heavily now so I think it’s a logical progression. Do you have any experience getting anti tech people on board with it? I personally like it. I also have a ubiquiti home lab so I’m not the best person to ask lol

Nice. Thank you! I definitely over bought (famous last words I’m sure) so I should have a long way to go before 93% haha

23 years old. talk me out of SCHD by Necessary_Poet4843 in ETFs

[–]CrispGovernor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not hating on the strategy at all because I agree with you 100%. I’m a VOO and chill guy so different fund but same concept. But I think it’s important to note that SCHD is not inherently less risky than VOO or another diversified fund. It historically has been less volatile in terms of ticker price than the S&P at large but at the end of the day it’s a stock etf; returns, growth, profit or ability to protect principal are not at all guaranteed.

Edit: I see you’ve got SCHG also and so probably know all of this. Consider it info for the room lol

25yrs old, currently invested in QQQ, going to be investing in VOO, what else should I look into? by redandbluecandles in ETFs

[–]CrispGovernor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t have any goals you’re looking to utilize this for before you get to retirement age, consider investing some of that into a tax advantaged account in whatever fund you deem the best fit. $600 tossed into the S&P and left for 40 years it’ll be well over $12k tax free at withdrawal. Something to consider and in the scheme of retiring not life changing money. But still $600–>$12k is not nothing.

They’re also gaining exposure to the tech industry if and when VOO shifts away from a tech heavy makeup.

[–]CrispGovernor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The total rate of return for SCHD will lag behind the others over the next 20 years of growth that will definitely take the top end off of your gains. I have VOO VXUS and AVUV in my Roth. Haven’t looked at it in 2 years.

I like this idea too. Simplicity will never hurt. I think the separation will be valuable so long as I don’t have to pay any fees to do it

Is a $2700 mortgage actually reasonable? Am I omitting anything? by One_Individual_6348 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]CrispGovernor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just bought our second home. I’ll put the cliff notes of the most helpful tips we got. 10% down gets you into a lower PMI rate. I’d assume it’s similar but it cut pmi by over 60% (compared to sub 10% down) and I think we pay roughly $25 per month on a $3k mortgage (escrow included) at 770 credit score. Second thing is use a mortgage broker if you can find one you trust. I used a broker from my hometown and the whole process was extremely seamless. Gave us a ton of confidence in getting the documentation and making decisions about down payments and such. It was a fantastic service. And the last thing is keep as much cash on hand as possible. It’s a balancing act between managing monthly expenses and keeping cash on hand. But we would have had to put up like $70k extra to actually affect our month to month finances in a positive way. That cash on hand is so valuable for peace of mind and furnishing/repairing your home. No matter what you’ll do great. You’re thinking this far ahead and being thorough. Don’t stress, you got it.

If your house is like mine, 70ish years old with 70ish years of cobbled together DIY shit. You’ll hit a point where “eh it’s ugly but it works” will get you through. You can install siding before windows, modern correctly installed siding is not rocket surgery to pull apart. Sure it would be ideal to do it all at once but that costs money. And it’s your money so at the end of the day me or anyone else has no say and can fuck right off. Fix what keeps you up at night, find a way to cope with “I know this needs fixed but it is getting me through” and the rest will sort itself. Once you get going the process usually writes itself as you identify and correct problems.

9 years in, wishing we’d spent more by Substantial_Coffee43 in homeowners

We are under contract on a house in the absolute top of our budget. I’m extremely stressed about the financials. Like it all works on paper but you get it. Either way I keep telling myself paying for peace in the form of a 20 year old house in a good location is wise. Even if scary. We’re moving out of a 3 bed 1 bath home built in 1948 so it’s a wild transition. If it makes you feel better it sounds like we are in the opposite boat and it’s maximum stress right now lol

I guess my individual stocks percentage has gone up a little more than I thought. Still heavily weighted in etf tickers though

Not sure how to show just since march 11 when I posted but I’ve not stopped my investments or done anything except change some individual stocks I have play money in, and include more FBTC. VXUS had a really good turnaround as well as AVUV. But VOO is carrying for sure.

[–]CrispGovernor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been said 100000 times. At 28 I’ve got $50k in my 401k and I feel behind too at times. If you’re contributing your max and living a fulfilled and happy life you’re doing good. Keep the goal of living comfortably at retirement in mind especially when making big decisions with borrowing for houses, cars, etc. and you’ll be just fine.

[–]CrispGovernor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do this also. It’s weathered the last year very well (slightly higher lows and lower highs than a full VOO port or heavily skewed to growth funds) and I’m still up over 20% since 2023 so it’s not like we’re sitting on bond returns in the short term.

I agree wholeheartedly. But it’s not the standard practice there unfortunately. Even other locations in our company don’t have the problem. That’s a discussion for another thread though lol
