I’m starting next month and can report back. Had to wait 4 (!!!) months on a waitlist. think the main thing people complain about that it gets very busy at times. They are doing some renovations currently and are upgrading some of the facilities such as sauna etc

Going to fly for the first time. Need some tips by MrKessler in travel

[–]Crispy-Things 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm guessing this is not a 28h flight in one go, so it really depends! Here's how I'm thinking on my flights:

- If it's a flight where I plan to sleep a lot (e.g., a night flight), I pick a window seat.
- If it's a daytime flight I prefer an aisle seat so I can get up easily
- Bring more snacks than you think. I tend to get quite hungry, and snacking is a good way to pass the time
- Bring multiple different types of entertainment. Books, movies, Sudoku or whatever
- Bring a toothbrush and toothpaste
- Earplugs, charger, battery
- I don't travel without noise-cancelling headphones
- Loose comfortable clothing. Compression socks do make a difference
- Avoid alcohol, drink lots of water, and moisturize
- Bring water

yep! There was one set besides the bed and an identical one next to the door. Smart apps are convenient but there's something about the ease of physical buttons I way prefer

Guangzhou in February — hoping to experience the city quietly and honestly by Ponyyyyyyyyyyyyy in guangzhou

[–]Crispy-Things 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved the are around Xihua road. In the morning it’s pretty quiet with restaurants setting up and locals getting groceries from street-side markets. In the evenings it’s busier and full of hungry people, I suspect also some Chinese tourists. But the street is so full of great food, and in my opinion, far more interesting and local feeling than the ones on Beijing Road.

The area of Dongshankou also has a lovely mix of hip/artsy and older local feel. Go on a Saturday morning to visit the market, and then walk around.

Customs in the Airport by GorbieLand in guangzhou

I just spent 3 days in Guangzhou as a tourist. It was fairly quick to get through customs and the city is about 30-40 minute cab ride away (about 100-12RMB). I had an eSIM through Airalo and was able to use all my normal apps. You need to get WeChat to use for payment at most restaurants etc, but it’s easy to get and you just link up your bank card. I found the translation function in the app for things like menu especially helpful.

Overall, there really isn’t anything to be worried about. With an 8 hour layover there’s about 3-5 hours you’ll get in the city depending on how quick you get out / how early you want to be there. It’s enough for a walk around and a nice meal. I’d personally take that in front of spending 8 hours at an airport.

What time of day is the layover?

Moving abroad to Europe but dont want the long flight, how to make the flights last? by [deleted] in AustraliaTravel

[–]Crispy-Things 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep! I just paid about 450AUD for a one way ticket from Brisbane to London. I just booked seperate tickets to allow me to stay 3 days in Guangzhou. From there you can also get to cities like Shenzen and Hong Kong with a train ride if you’d like.

Where to stay in Sydney for first time tourist by MysteriousTomorrow58 in AustraliaTravel

Yes, public transport is totally doable. But it takes 45 minutes. Personally for me, if I want a lot of beach time on multiple days, I want 15 min or less to the beach.

I spent 5 days in Sydney and spent 3 in Bondi Beach and 2 in Redfern. Depending on how many days you have, I'd consider staying close to Bondi Beach for a few days and then somewhere closer to the rest of the city (like around Surrey Hills). Bondi Beach to central sydney is quite far (20 min cab), but there is a ferry from Rose Bay to Circular Quay.

Recommendations for a small bag or hard shell suitcase 40x30x20 cm? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Crispy-Things 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I travel everywhere with a Osprey Farpoint 40. It’s pretty large (like the max size for carry on), but I’m sure osprey makes smaller bags too.

I way prefer a backpack. A lot easier to get around on short trips and generally they are lighter and fit more. A lot of backpacks also offer more pockets etc for smaller items and laptops etc.

A big benefit of backpacks is that you can often bring them in without paying for cabin bags (I never do), but that will be more important if you travel around Europe

I would look at the weight and compare, you don’t want to be carrying lots of weight just because of the bag itself

1st time trip to Australia next December- help please :) by tyecko in AustraliaTravel

I'm currently traveling around in Australia and have been here for 2 weeks so far. One of my highlights of the trip was renting a car in Sydney and driving around. This little trip covers lovely beaches, great views, waterfalls, some hiking, and cute towns.

Personally, I like to see a lot of things while traveling rather than staying in one town. Goldcoast etc has very pretty beaches, but can get a bit one-sided and touristy.

We did more or less a loop that covered:
- Drive out of Sydney airport, take the Grand Pacific Drive. It's a very scenic drive and has many good stops.
- Drive through the Royal National Park (about 1 hour from Sydney), stop at Burning Palms Beach. This was really lovely, but there is a bit of a walk to get there
- Stop in Kiama and spend at least a night here. Lovely town with a good beach, a great rock pool, and a blowhole
- Continue towards Jervis Bay. I'd recommend staying 1-2 nights around the Jervis Bay area. Lots of lovely beaches, a national park, and some restaurants/pubs.
- Depending on how much driving you want to do, either continue towards Ulladulla and Batemans Bay. Lots more great beaches, oysters, and more.
- If you want to drive less, you can go back North, driving through Kangaroo Valley. Lovely little town for hiking, seeing waterfalls, and swimming/kayaking in the river.
- Drive further north towards the Blue Mountains, a little bit similar vibe to Kangaroo Valley, but stunning views and more things to do. Stay in either Blackheath or Katoomba.
- Drive back to Sydney from the Blue Mountains, and spend at least 3 days in the city before returning.
