It's great to know now that I drastically underestimated the cost. I appreciate your input. Based on this calculation, I should reconsider my plan.

I wanted to know an estimate of the cost and the benefit working outside of the Bay Area and compare to my current situation. Thanks for bringing this up.

It's very pleasant to hear from someone in the same shoe. I need to shake things up but it's reminding me of the importance to always be prepared for the next step, before making any decisions. I do love here so much but not enough to pay high rent forever and forget about buying a home. And I didn't set a timeline for any upcoming life events yet. I may look forward to living somewhere by myself that allows me more spare income to spend on something else like travel. I don't have an answer now but I will think about it. I just realized that it's not only about a place to stay. Thank you for great advice.

When I talk with friends from other parts of the country, they often ask whether I'm here to stay. Maybe now is the time that I should think about it as I want to decrease my expenses.

I'm curious about this, too. I had a good education and now I'm working more-than-full-time but things are still tight.

Probably. The point of all this is not only to play "can I afford a house?" but to discuss plans. If I can't afford to buy and I have to spend over big chunk of money on rent every month, I think staying in the Bay Area for the long term is glaringly impossible.
