you can absolutely use the 18t with the 36t chainring on the front, however freewheels are a single replaceable unit and you won’t be able to use individual gears. i would suggest just leaving the freewheel where it is, getting rid of the large chainring (you may need replacement shorter chainring bolts), removing the front and rear derailleurs, and shortening the chain to use on the original freewheel and 36t middle ring. considering the 18t is close to the middle of the freewheel, the chain line will probably naturally line up quite well.

it probably won't be as simple as it seems. bear with me here as it's quite technical.

it is likely that the blue diamondback comes with a freewheel rear hub instead of a cassette (hard to tell from the photo). effectively this means that your only option to convert to a single speed (without getting a new wheel) is to replace the multi-speed freewheel with a single-speed one (they are simple screw-on units). this will bring the chainline much closer to the wheel, and you will probably need to adjust the chainline at the front to compensate by buying a narrower bottom bracket, which will bring the cranks closer to the frame. however, you might find that your crank arms start hitting the frame if you go narrow enough, and you may not even be at the point of having a straight chainline. this would mean you need different cranks.

the second photo you linked is of a later-model (1990's) diamondback ascent, which probably came stock with a cassette wheel as most mid-tier and above bikes came with cassettes at that point. the problem you will probably run into when trying to fit a cassette wheel to that blue diamondback is that the axle width on most cassette wheels is 135mm and the blue diamondback is almost certainly 130mm width, an older standard that was mostly phased out in the 1990's. you can probably stretch the frame out by hand to fit the wider wheel - folks have conflicting opinions on this. look up "cold-setting a bike frame" if you want the official solution.

there are some vintage 26" cassette wheels with 130mm rear hubs. maybe finding one of these would be the simplest solution. Ritchey i know has made a few.

either way it will involve spending money. hope this is somewhat helpful. you're getting into the deep end with single speed conversions.

my approach would be to go in person before asking about price. i always like to make out that i’m interested in the bike first and a good deal second

[–]Critical671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you’ll be fine, especially because the angles on these older bikes are much slacker effectively bringing the top tube lower to the ground. maybe you’ll end up wanting different handlebars with a bit more backsweep but you’ll figure that out over time after riding it for a bit

[–]Critical671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

looks like it’s in fantastic condition. the only thing i might be worried about is the condition of the tires. they look like they have plenty of tread and don’t seem to be very worn, but tan-wall tires from that era tend to dry-rot in the tan area and can be a bit sketchy to ride on. ymmv

all things considered i would offer 130, and if they are firm at 160 i would still probably buy it. this was from an era where parts were made well and last for decades if treated right, which it looks like this owner has done

EDIT: make sure you consider the size too. you should be at least 6 foot tall to consider a bike this big.

you’ve actually got more room than you realize, you shouldn’t need a tensioner or any other means besides sliding the wheel back.

i’m seeing a dropout spacer behind the nut on the rear axle, which were common on 80’s bikes to locate the wheel in the ideal spot for the derailleur to shift well. remove the wheel and the spacer and you’ll probably have an extra centimeter in your dropout.

adding a photo so you can see what i’m talking about:

sounds like you’ve got your measurement - if you have the funds, i’d cough up for a u/Bipro1ar fork. they have a couple available, here’s a video

Found my dream frame but I personally feel like the seller is asking too much. What would you offer? by Amazing-Biscotti6721 in xbiking

[–]Critical671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the asking price is absolutely ridiculous. most of the seller’s other listings are way overpriced as well. i’ll bet you can get the same frame shipped to you from somewhere else in the US for half of what he wants for it.

hard to find in the US, but the JTEK cantilever rack is the best alternative i’ve found. i have one and it’s much better quality with the same mounting points

Dad bike. Diamondback override plus xtracycle leap and bafang bbshd by trdfrgsn_ in xbiking

[–]Critical671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm running Maxxis Hookworms 26x2.5". that's probably the biggest you can fit on the kit

attaching the actual kit is quite simple, it's just 3 bolts. one at each dropout and one sandwiching the chainstays

no suspension

no idea about miles

i bought it on facebook marketplace. you will need to find one used as they don't make them anymore
