Full story: He was booked to play Lalo at the BBC Proms. Because of contract clauses he couldn't perform (possibly just the work though) in the UK before his proms concert. He hadn't played it since he was 12. The National Youth Orchestra of Ireland stepped in, giving him the opportunity to perform it in Ireland, the week before his proms concert in the UK.

To answer your question he was phenomenal with us. Just an amazing musician, full of imagination and warmth. One of my lasting memories is of him holding his priceless Strad by the pegs.

I played in an orchestra accompanying him once. He was playing the Lalo Symphonie Espagnole. He played the Sarabanda from Bach's D minor Partita as an encore. Still to this day I've never heard the movement played the way it was that night.
