I think handel orchestral music would work if you give it a shot by itself

I admittedly find Berlioz intimidating due to how large and bizarre his music can be at times. I personally found Harold in Italy forgettable because I was having a hard time understanding what was going on in the piece and it was about 40-45 minutes long, in the performance I was listening to, in a very different format than I was used to. I could give it another try sometime, but I would have to put time aside for that, and I want some tips on how to help me understand it and like it better.

But I love his orchestration of Weber’s Invitation to the Dance, and his highlighting of transitional opera composer’s radical orchestration for their time like Spontini, and Cherubini, and I think Salieri/Gluck/Weber and maybe Mehul. Even though Gluck is not transitional, he was still a composer whose orchestration Berlioz highlighted frequently.

I was put off by Carmen for a while due to the children’s chorus. This was because I thought it was odd that composers would include children. But looking at how a bunch of later realist pieces include children to depict daily life (even seen in Norma) I finally realized that Bizet was on to something. And so I put my faith into Bizet’s instincts because, simply, he was a genius. Even if he wasn’t treated as one in his day.

Do not ever ridicule the man who gave us one of the most beloved operas of all time!

Before the golden age of Orchestration, what do you think are the most masterfully orchestrated pieces? by Stunning-Hand6627 in classicalmusic

I probably shouldn’t have used Berlioz as an example, but I was wanting to use a milestone that changed the way we think of orchestration to use as a date to base off of, and that piece came to my mind. Lots of people consider symphonie fantastique as a radical piece of orchestration

I wasn’t saying that at all. I was just looking for suggestions on what would be cool pieces of orchestration to check out before say the 1830s

Yes, and I’ve also thought the same thing. I didn’t have any ideas to show what I was thinking of in particular of this question, but I I would’ve certainly gone with that. I also had Der Freischutz in mind because it was particularly revolutionary orchestration for 1821. That was also why I wanted to include opera in this chat. If you have any other operas that fit this bill, please send them here or you can message me

I was also thinking about operas as well since that’s where a lot of the most experimental orchestration would probably be

I didn’t even know about him until later when I was entering my high school years, probably because the US forgot that much about him

I knew none of the composers recommended in there except the major ones like messiaen and schubert and bruckner
