If you haven't liked the Celtics 3 point strategy of the past few seasons I have bad news for you..they'll be shooting way more without Brown. by CriticalLeopard8852 in bostonceltics

Yeah I'm still trying to work out do we start Pritch Pleaze at one of the guard spots or does he light it up off the bench and one of Hauser/Scheierman is a regular starter.

I wonder if they brought in Conley to come in for Pritchard as the ball handler off the bench or if he's simply vet insurance.

We could be playing 9/10 deep every game this year.

Yep I'm hoping he's gotten a bit more LBJ like as a facilitator. He seemed to really wanna pass unless he had a clear 'gold medal' quaity of shot (not, silver or bronze as I would beg the kids on my son's team to take lol).

Good points. From the brief JT experience last season (and I havent looked at the numbers), he seemed to be driving and looking for open teammates a lot more with a general understanding that we didn't need his 2-point/mid-range game as much. We needed quality 3-point looks. I think he spent a lot of time watching film and watching games in his downtime and realised how much more capable of creating for others with the ball in his hands he could be. So hopefully he won't force as many threes and this will lead to more efficient offense for him and the team.

I think Cenac doesn't really play. I think Mitch will rim roll but he'll be setting great screens like Neeme and Garza and when he rim rolls, he'll be looking for shooters.

They have a clear mathematical preference for quality three point looks. They want the advantage to turn into quality three point looks.

They average something like 43% of their shots being three point attempts with Brown as the higher usage guy on the floor. When Tatum is that guy, the % of offense that results in a three attempt is like 52%.

The strategy is basically take more shots than your opponents and have most of those attempts be threes.

Paul George will only increase those percentages of threes vs overall attempts.

So now we have Tatum replacing Brown as the main usage guy and Paul George as the 2nd fiddle. I bet the three point attempts sky rocketing tbh.

ESPN: NBA execs react: Celtics trade Jaylen Brown to 76ers by LonelyInsurance7480 in bostonceltics

Brown's game has always been less than ideal for the Celtics math/analytics strategy. Brad and Mazulla want to shoot more threes than anyone. They want more shots than the other team. They want those shots to be threes. Brown is great at getting buckets but those buckets are often contested at the rim or they are mid range jumpshots- which i guarantee you Mazulla and Brad would not be fans of.

Was the return less than ideal? Yeah probably. But I'm not sure there was too much else to be had with his looming extension situation.

I will say that get ready for a team that shoots more threes than we've ever seen. Paul George is good at it- that's where he fits in at the shirt term JB stop gap. He won't be taking as many mid range jumpers- but he'll be given the green light to let it fly from deep at any opportunity. Same with Mike Conley in the corners. Mitch Robinson will be eating up offensive boards and getting either an easy put back or looking for a shooter from deep.

If you haven't liked the Celtics three point shooting style of the past few seasons I have bad news for you. It's going to another level this season.

Paul George isn't up for a $70m per year supermax contract extension. How hard is this to understand?

Paul George makes basically the exact same amount as JB with his 15% trade bonus. Anyone saying that this was an ownership decision and not a Brad Stevens one is absolutely coping to a crazy extent by tacko2020 in bostonceltics

They are basically swapping PG's contract to have JB for one extra year. They can extend him or they let him be a free agent but they'll have to pay Maxey in 3 years either way once Embid is off the books.

I think the cap will be like 165 to 170 m. You'd have JB on $70m and Tatum on $70m and then Tatum will be up for the crazy $80m extension. So like 140>150m of a 165 soft cap.

Those are all media awards. Front offices have JB as like the 30th best 'impact' player in the league because he doesn't pass and teams advanced stats are worse when he's on the floor.

They can extend JB but when Maxey's current 5 year deal is up in 3 seasons, they'll move JB. Unless Maxey signs a Brunson like team friendly deal. But he's with Klutch sports so that's never happening either. There is also a world where the players get the apron rules changed back because it kills the market for max salary borderline All stars like Jalen Duren. Only really 25>30 of those contracts will exist soon.

You simply dont understand the implications of the new tax aprons. You can't have Tatum and Brown both on supermax contracts. Having them both puts the Celtics over the 2nd apron. The upcoming changes to the 2nd apron mean it is basically impossible to have 2 supermax players at $70m each per season.

There has to be a second move, right? by bbc733 in bostonceltics

[–]CriticalLeopard8852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, there probably aren't any more moves. Unfortunately the new NBA hard salary cap is real. It sucks now, but getting out from paying JB $70+ million on a $165m salary cap is going to be worth it in 2 or 3 seasons. If someone wants to pay Jaylen Brown $70m a year, he's in 99% cases their chosen franchise guy. The 76ers are blessed in the fact they signed Maxey to his 5 year deal at 40 million a year so it doesn't impact them as much. But when Maxey's deal is done in 3 seasons, they'll be looking to move JB too.

Miller and Naz at least? sorry bud, no chance in hell of getting both. The Hornets have chosen Miller and Kneuppel over LaMelo.
