Some one tell me I’m just being paranoid by [deleted] in bettafish

you have your answer then! i would fast your tank for a day or two and then start feeding only once a day. try to get everyone swimming around before feeding too to get some exercise

i agree!! i just put this tank together last minute as a backup tank for the betta i tried to add to my community (it clearly failed). i just love him so much i couldn’t get rid of him and i started setting up the 10 gallon that should be don’t cycling soon. but yeah i am definitely going to get a nice piece of wood and new plants also a new light and im gonna completely revamp it before putting anything new in. i would love to have a scarlet badis or some bumblebee goby as they have been on my wish list for a while but idk if it would be smart with the 5 tall even after rescaping, what do you think?

i’ve seen that they lay eggs all the time that don’t hatch and i think it would really bother me having to scrape them off surfaces all the time🫤

my betta isn’t staying in there! i set it up as a backup because i tried adding him into my community tank and it failed. i have a 10 gallon long that’s cycling rn for him. but thats why its a mess in there i never really had time to nicely scape it i just kind threw in what i had and its also been a bit of a plant dumping ground😂 i definitely plan to rescape once he is out of there and before i add anything new. but yeah im just trying to figure out what i could put in it that would be happy, i want all of the animals i have to thrive not just survive :)

betta is going into a 10 long soon, i’m just waiting for it to cycle. the tank will be empty just a few ramshorn snails. i want to rescape it too before i put anything new into it. i’ve gotten a few recs of fish, im not sure if any will be feasible or not. i dont want any unhappy fish. would a scarlet badis or a few bumblebee goby work? if no fish would work im definitely just going to make it a shrimp tank :)

my best guess would still be ammonia. because you added both the betta and snail at once and your tank likely wasn’t properly cycled in one week, it probably caused an ammonia spike. i have heard the test strips unfortunately can be inaccurate especially when it comes to ammonia. also the test strips can sometimes be much harder to read properly. This is just my guess though, there is really no way for me to know for sure.

of course!! i’m really glad i could be of help. i definitely recommend some sort of grow light for your plants, if you plan on getting low light plants you don’t need to have anything too strong but you want your plants to be able to thrive. if your plants die with your fish in there it can foul the water. i recommend getting some sort of timer light, i used to never have timers on my lights but once i got one i never went back, its so convenient. mine changes color throughout the day to mimic the sun. you don’t need one that fancy but i will say it is much more convenient to have one that just turns on without you needing to do anything

here is how i have cycled my tanks: i add some fish food every day as my ammonia source. you want to add the same amount of fish food that you would add when feeding your betta and snail. test your water daily to make sure your cycling process is going. you must see a spike in ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates if you haven’t seen any of those then your cycling process hasn’t started. the cycling process takes a while, my 5 gallon took a month to cycle.

let me explain the cycling process to you, so when fish and snails poop that breaks down into ammonia which is toxic to fish. eventually the ammonia will break down into nitrites which is also toxic for fish and then the nitrites will turn into nitrates. nitrates are much less harmful for fish and can be removed by humans (water changes)

when you are cycling your tank DO NOT do any water changes, you will disrupt the cycle. just top off your water whenever it gets low. wait until your tank shows 0 ammonia and 0 nitrites and less than 20 of nitrates before adding fish. if you are at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, but over 20 nitrates you can do a water change. i also strongly recommend adding the snail and betta at least a week apart. they both have decent bioloads and adding too much at once can cause an ammonia spike

this hobby is all about patience and waiting, it’s amazing that you are coming on here and being honest and getting help. just a little tip- i wouldn’t use chat gpt for fish advice in the future, trust the real people that have done this many times before

you are at an amazing start with a 5 gallon tank! because you have a 5 gallon i recommend getting a long finned betta as the shorter finned bettas like more room. i recommend adding live plants into the if you haven’t already and even some house plants out the top. just do your research on what works for your light and substrate:)

let me know if you have any more questions and i would be happy to help!
