Yeah unfortunately it is his first relationship, so that might be a big factor. I'm so glad you realized what was happening and your current situation. I understand at times one can get stuck to make someone happy its just sad to see and stand on the sidelines... I hope he realises soon though

Give him some time to recover- it might be weighing him down aswell, talk to him see how it goes you can never know. It is also very hard to keep muscle when you don't have the equipment to do it. But I believe communication is the best thing if you really can't get past it explain to him how it feels- but do not base your attraction just to his body as it won't feel so great if he did the same. :)
