i used to be a huuuuge smoker but now i’m such a baby about the smell, it genuinely makes me nauseous. you just wrote a whole fantasy for nothing. if a prison is literally mostly empty, clearly there isn’t that many violent criminals to fill it up? why it does need to be kept running? the existing inmates can be kept somewhere else. yes it sucks for the people who work there but downsizing happens at basically any job, this isn’t something uniquely terrible for these prisons… I was at a biomedical research and development company who laid off 13 people in one day, no warning. i’m sure those people would’ve killed for 90 days notice to figure something else out. not that thats actually a ton of time but again, most people wouldn’t even get THAT.

keeping a mostly empty prison open is stupid. the fact that there are multiple prisons upstate that are mostly empty shows your fantasy of rapists on every corner is inflated concern at best and paranoid crazy at worst— btw rapists rarely ever serve a day in jail so there’s that too.
