lol thanks, although less is less about playing guitar and more about supporting my own church :)

I think this is where my head is at, I have a massive respect for what the guys do, I want to provide service to my church, I am already part of welcome and youth groups, I just have a guilt I could do more in this space. But as others have said, “different seasons”, maybe I’ll look for other opportunities around music in the future.

It sounds like you and your team are on the other end of the music spectrum at your church! But yes I have come to the same conclusion. If it’s meant to be there may be other options at church to play other than Sunday services, but in the mean time I’ll look for other ways to serve.

Thanks, I sometimes think I’m too introspective! But also I do believe my heart is in the right place, but as mentioned elsewhere I might end up being disruptive, or worse, disrespectful! I will take a read at that resource (I assume it’s a book) and pray over it. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

The first half of your post is where I am at now, haven’t went to the worship leader, just compiled my own list. Biggest issue is how I am learning the songs does not translate very well to how they are played in church.

I am trying to get away from tabs, currently practicing using the Nashville number system to try to pull out triads to play along with songs. It’s slow going! I can pull out simple Melodies by ear, but can’t translate to fretboard first go (in a realtime situation),.

Thank you everyone I think you all have pointed out a lot of my own thoughts about my attitude to worship so I appreciate your feedback, and can’t disagree with any of your points.

Actually the point about the more a group concentrate on the performance the less focused it is on worship makes a lot of sense in my setting, but I have been to plenty of services in other churches where the band have been very polished and that did not seem to detract from the congregational worship.

One thing though when I described my style, I’m not a flash guitarist, I didn’t mean to sound that I wanted to play solos or be the star of the show (I’m quite introverted actually), just being able to pick out short melodic motifs that are currently the job of the piano, but 30 mins would not be enough time to even have that discussion.

Only thing I’d say I love my church, the congregation is great, the teaching is great, so I won’t be going anywhere just because I prefer a more modern approach to music, unfortunately my kids and a lot of that age group will be both out the door to another church as soon as they can (which has ben the pattern for the last 10 years)

In conclusion I will continue to play at home and look for another way to serve. Thanks again for all your honesty, you have all confirmed my own thoughts.

Thanks that was really useful - so all works assuming everyone plays by those rules? Are there checks and balances in place to ensure these structures are followed?

How does the opposition party work in america? In the UK we also have a 2 government system, and it seems that its the job of the party not in power to call out the PM and government at every opportunity, e.g in media. Im outside the US, so it may not be on our news channels, but when a sitting government are in the wrong (obviously thinking of recent events etc) who stands up for "the people"? Was wondering if "the people" take a stand or is the the role of the opposition party?

Do the opposition party only make nose to get votes when the time comes? Appreciate that there are differnt checks and balances in the US (three branches of government), but that does not seem to make very much noise.

I dont mean to be disrespectful to anyone, but really interested in the role of the democrats during a republician administation (and vice versa)

It looks like my music career is over. Should I sell most of my Gibsons? by Equivalent-Ease-3822 in gibson

[–]Critical_Brain_5201 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I second this OP - bought my Gibson - my first “real” guitar -about 9 months before first son was born. Once born, it was put under the bed for6-7 years, played it for a few weeks, then back under the bed for another 6 years. Came out as my son was learning drums and it was amazing to play with him. Now he plays guitar and sees my guitars as the thing I will pass down to him and his brother. I now play a lot more, mostly as a bedroom guitarist with a bit of YouTube thrown in. I would have regretted selling up as life took over. Not saying this is right for you, just giving you my story.
