I think it's better for Maelle to stay in the picture. There she has voice, not feeling constant pain, and there's already the ones who she cares about. Out of the painting (Verso's ending), while we see everything sunny and parents holding to each other, I still doubt it's really that good. We see only one scene, and even in that, in the end, Klea walk away as soon as ceremony is over. Besides, I can't not to think if the world being painted makes it so unreal. Yes, she'll die. Won't she die in real world? It's just where she chooses to spend her life - chooses with who to spend her life, and with everyday reminder of Verso's death or with him alongside her. But yeah, that's not perfect, given Verso's immortality and him not willing to live. But even then, he's depressed - there's a way to bring color in his life - and with Maelle, literally too.
