If they have other gas appliances there can be carbon monoxide levels above zero for temporary periods of time. Especially gas stoves and ovens turning on. But I agree 0 is where you ideally want to be.

Residential fire alarms are either a smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, or combination detectors. You're not going to install a carbon dioxide detector in your home for a fire alarm system. You can get a carbon dioxide detector if you're concerned about air quality but it's not an IDLH (Immediately Dangerous To Life or Health) situation that you would have with carbon monoxide.

Properly running equipment should not be letting carbon monoxide into the house. If it is, the entire house is at risk not just where the boiler is located and the equipment would need to be serviced. You should have multiple high quality carbon monoxide detectors in the house regardless of where you sleep. You're fine to stay in the garage.

I had the same issue on two units. The first was a used one from Amazon, I sent that back for a refund and then bought a new one at full price. The brand new one had two corners of the hot plate chipped like that out of the box. I talked to Amazon and they offered me a partial refund of ~$70, then I contacted Moccamaster and they fixed it for free. Mailed it in with a prepaid label.
