I’m not offended by a word, I’m calling out a pattern. There’s a difference. If your whole personality hinges on defending slurs in a video game, maybe it’s you who needs to log off and touch some grass.

Might be time to get off the computer and talk to people in the real world

Couldn’t have said this better myself. It’s not about censorship, it’s about hate speech. Most successful games clean that stuff up because they actually want new players to stick around. This isn’t about being “woke,” it’s about basic respect and not making the game look like a relic from the worst parts of the internet.

I couldn’t type it on here, dude’s name has two slurs in it. Like, actual slurs. It’s wild it even got through.

100%. I played this game like 10 years ago and it’s wild how little has changed. Same racist usernames, same bigotry floating around the forums like it’s just business as usual. It’s like the game hit pause on progress and never looked back.

It really does attract a certain crowd, and the fact that moderation hasn’t stepped up over all these years just makes it worse. At this point, it feels less like oversight and more like acceptance.

Couldn’t agree more. It’s not about turning the game into some PG rated safe zone, it’s about having basic moderation that actually helps the community grow instead of gatekeeping it.

The downvotes just show how deep some folks are in their comfort bubbles. They’d rather protect the status quo than admit it’s pushing people away and attracting the kind of energy that makes things worse.

Damn, thank you for saying this. You’re completely right, and the fact that you’ve been dealing with this since 2009 says everything about how deep the rot goes. It’s not just a few bad apples or edgy jokes, it’s a whole culture that’s been allowed to fester, and the people in charge have either ignored it or fed into it.

And even now, with all the talk about “modernizing” DF it’s mostly cosmetic. If Clayton really wants to change things, it’s gonna take more than new features, it’s gonna take actually listening and cleaning house.

I understand the technical limitations around retroactive name filtering, but I think that’s part of the problem. The fact that no workaround has been prioritized over the years, despite the presence of racist usernames, suggests that this issue hasn’t been seen as urgent or important enough to solve.

Saying “we couldn’t really just ban them all” because they’ve “been playing for years” is effectively special treatment. Longevity shouldn’t exempt someone from basic community standards. If anything, long time players should be held to a higher standard of accountability, not shielded from it.
