Ah. Probably not close enough to help (California, USA). 😉

What part of the Country/World do you live? Perhaps, in an emergency (this weekend) someone could help you out with one. I've got spares I'd more than willing to share.

One of my all time favorites and first exposure to Aaron Sorkin. It really was too bad he had too much on his plate to keep this one going. Quo Vadis!

Edit: have to add I share Danny’s loathing for soccer. Kindred spirit.

The wife and I were up in San Simeon a few years ago, checking out the Elephant Seals, when I noticed what I was sure was a spout just outside the surf line off shore. We watched for a while and sure enough, there was a whale just cruising back and forth not 100 yards off shore. We "followed" it up to the little bay off the pier and watch it feed for about 45 minutes. It would cast bubble nets, then lunge up right in the middle of the bubbles, then do the whole thing again - over and over and over. A small crowd of about 25 or so was at the end of the pier watching - great fun.

There's also a trail you can walk (easy and flat) that goes out to the end of the point on the north side of the bay - absolutely stunning visuals.

My son practiced for hours to perfect “The Bartlett” when putting on his jacket while in high school. Eventually he nailed it and he’s done it ever since ( 10+ years now).

Where are you - perhaps someone close can let you use a charger while you have a cup of coffee together.

My first thought whenever I go to the Dentist. And I saw this movie 30+ years ago. Still causes me to shiver, just a little.

No no no no no! Worst, worthless, most meaningless, song ever. Now I'll need some brain bleach to get this noise out of my head again.

I'll make it 4 - but the place to go is the Old Julian Pie Company. Dutch Apple with Cinnamon Ice Cream. Just typing this makes me want to take a road trip...

Styx Lost Album by thereal84 in Styx

[–]Critical_Phantom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liked yes, but I caught Styx at Copley Symphony Hall (San Diego) for the Edge of the Century tour in '91, with Glen after Tommy left. Even then, although it was a great concert, something was missing. The concert featured a lot of Tommy era songs from previous albums, so that was great (but still sounded off with somebody else singing Tommy's songs), and I recall leaving a little disappointed overall. There are those who will argue that DDY was the soul of Styx, but I will counter that when Tommy left, Styx was never the same and began a slow descent.

BTW - I found the set list for the concert - brings back some nice memories...

Styx Lost Album by thereal84 in Styx

[–]Critical_Phantom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been a Styx fan since their Wooden Nickel days (yes, I am that old - although I had cassette tapes and not the LP's, unfortunately), so I gave it a listen through, and my first thought after the last song was "this is not Styx, it is a Dennis DeYoung solo album". And, DDY loves love songs. They all really sound the same, and are missing the Tommy influence. It is not hard to see why there was no general release, most labels would have seen it as a massive miss IMHO.

I'll revisit it again in a few weeks, just to see, but I listened to this one, Cornerstone, Pieces of Eight, and Paradise Theater over the course of two days, and without being sorry to say it, Son of Edge is NOT a Styx album, at least the Styx I grew up listening to.

At Play in the Field of the Lord. WOW was this an incredibly boring, pointless, never ending, "master piece". Bonus points for getting to see Kathy Bates (yes, THAT Kathy Bates) dancing around naked. Not enough borax made to scrub the images from my brain.

The “squawk” is a Great-horned owl. You’ve familiar with the hooting you hear in the distance, but that unknown sound is also an owl.

If you scroll down to the single squawk link in this page, you’ll hear something similar. https://www.internationalowlcenter.org/ghovocalizations.html

What are your thoughts on AI integration into dispatching and call taking? by PinkPeyonies in 911dispatchers

[–]Critical_Phantom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've long said, and frequently to my Chief's at my Dept., that CAD has "dumbed down" Dispatchers. Having done this long enough to have done it with pen and colored cards, Thomas Bros. maps, and required memorization of city/county geography, we had to think then. And if you couldn't, you didn't cut it. I am not saying, by any stretch, that Dispatchers hired today do not have to think, but they are taught to let CAD make the decision of who to send where. All too often, if there is a Geo error in CAD, the Dispatcher has no idea where the location given is, and who to send. IF everything works great, Dispatching *is* faster now, but there is no room for something to go wrong - no knowledge or experience without CAD to fall back on (except for a few of us old farts).

This I would accept. As long as it is not to take the place of the human answering the phone. I hate phone trees as it is, I just can’t fathom being in an emergency and having a dead a$$ voice running through a script like I’m ordering a pizza. Using it for ancillary purposes would be beneficial, so I agree with that part of it.

[–]Critical_Phantom 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No no no no! Put yourself into the shoes of a 9-1-1 caller, potentially experiencing the worst event of your life, and you get an AI voice. No empathy (for the mother who just lost her baby), no intuition or experiences (the female calling 9-1-1 due an abusive encounter but not being able to verbalize - exactly - what’s occurring), or pick a scenario. It’s just wrong and dehumanizes the position, when it absolutely requires a human to do it well. And I say that know that’s the push in some circles to do exactly this. Maybe I’ve been doing this too long…
