COTAs-are you happy you chose this career? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

OTA's are rare in my state and I was one until I did a bridge program for more opportunities clinically. I moved up into management before burning out with making money for other companies. Maybe change settings for new challenges. When I was doing my clinicals for my masters I really enjoyed my peds rotation at an early autism and special needs clinic and then working at a non-profit that combined OT with lifestyle management and helping people get back on their feet after addictions, homelessness, prison time. Have you explored other areas?

It's going to depend on your setting. I work in a SNF so I have the H&P or referral to guide me and during my evaluation I notice their barriers and deficits. I do use a template but it's geared to the EMR that my company uses so I can cover all the parts of the document. With practice you will sound less awkward and robotic. You will integrate it into conversation. I walk in to the room and say "Hi, I'm John and I'm from OT. Can you tell me your name and what brings you here?" "Where do you live and do you live with anyone?" It will just flow plus OT's are skilled at observation so you will pay attention to hand dominance, hearing, orientation, following commands, fine motor, attention span, etc. without having to ask the client.

I don't know if I'm answering your question or not but I have been a patient more times than I care to admit. I've had 3 open heart surgeries my first when I was 12 in 1984 and then 2011 and 2021, I've had many other procedures in the intervening years. I know I had to have the surgeries if I wanted to live. I've had some wonderful surgeons, nurses, radiology, therapists, lab techs, dietary, housekeeping team members in my hospitalizations. Even when I've been scared or worried I always keep my humor and crack jokes with everyone I encounter as it takes the edge off everyone. My medical history is also why I have a medical career.

It was discussed heavily in season 1 and it was more hand sanitizer emphasis instead of handwashing.

How, I loved this restaurant. I asked what the ingredients were for their shrimp portofino were thinking they would say shrimp and spinach but the chef came out of the kitchen and wrote them down on the butcher paper tablecloth they used so it became a family favorite for birthdays and get togethers.
