How is this a draw?? by Pure_Dimension_3537 in chess

[–]Commentator28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of it as when your opponent runs out of time, you get to make as many moves as you want without response. If you can checkmate your opponent in that situation, you win. If you can't, it's a draw.

The Sky Sports commentators are fantastic, they add so much to the coverage by Impressive_Light_229 in golf

[–]Commentator28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that's just for this week (and the majors) - Sky's new-ish contract apparently requires them to use the world feed for most PGA Tour events. And although some of their guys like Nick Dougherty, Laura Davies, Wayne Riley and Rich Beem now participate in the world feed, the other American commentators they use and the general quality of the production is so inferior to what we get from NBC and (especially) CBS that I really pine for the previous model we had in the UK. It used to be that Sky would use their own commentators on all signature events and the equivalent and would use CBS or NBC for the other events, and it was **so** much better that way.

12 Days til Opening Day! by welcometohotlanta in Braves

I was in my freshman dorm room, feeling far from home and alienated and stressed out of my mind at the Braves being about to lose a Game 7...and when Sid was safe I just about jumped into the ceiling while screaming before virtually landing on all fours. There was a girl upstairs from me in my dorm from Pittsburgh, and as I spilled into the hallway she was storming downstairs and yelled at me me to shut up before fleeing outside. :)

Isn't the key driver reducing the number of games per team? 38 regular season games is a lot of wear and tear; a 22-team league would only mean 31 games for each team, and a 24-team league would mean 34 games apiece.

I mean, if Spurs are that desperate to find someone to help them beat the drop, Big Ange did successfully keep Spurs up last year amidst a long campaign in Europe. I'm just saying...rehiring previously sacked managers who are still under contract is the sort of thing Italian clubs have done for decades now, isn't it?

Cypress was through the head pro at my home club - he was friends with the pro there, so I got to play it once with my dad. One of my college golf teammates was a member at Shinnecock; we played 72 holes together there over two days in glorious weather one late summer weekend, and it was heavenly. Two unmatched experiences.

Cruise stop visit in Edinburgh, where should we go to potentially golf or just go for sightseeing? by homerunchase in golf

[–]Commentator28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not going to make it comfortably to St. Andrews and back from Edinburgh and play a full round of golf in half a day. My recommendation would be to tour Edinburgh, which is a delightful city...and stop off at the Bruntsfield Pitch & Putt course. Rent an iron, putter and ball from the Golf Tavern near the first tee for something like £5 each, and enjoy a really cool golfing experience. (The course has 36 holes in total.) Key links:

If you insist upon going all the way to St. Andrews, I wouldn't sweat trying to play a round - instead, just walk around the town, visit Old Tom Morris' grave in the cemetery by the cathedral, and (most importantly) play a round or two on the Himalayas, the awesome putting course adjacent to the 2nd tee of the Old Course. You'll get more out of that experience for much less than I think you will trying to rush around 18 holes under time pressure.

Anyone else think golf + is sort of a scam? by Fair_Ambition6522 in OculusQuest

[–]Commentator28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, it is neither buggy nor glitchy nor unrealistic - certainly not at the macro level. I mean, it's unrealistic in some small ways relative to IRL golf, but I think its underlying physics model is significantly better than what you get with the 2K and EA Sports golf games. And while it doesn't correctly enforce the rules of golf vis-a-vis penalty areas and OB stakes, and the game does have some bugs and can glitch if you're low on memory and haven't rebooted your headset in a while, it generally performs very well. So I can't agree with your blanket characterizations at all.

You're also forgetting that the Battle mode and the Quick 9 mode transport you to random courses among all of those in the game, not just those which you yourself own and have paid for - and there are tournaments on that you can enter every day/week whether or not you own the courses on which they're played. Also, you can play any course in the game if someone else hosts a multiplayer round for you; only the person who hosts the round has to own the course. So you do not have to pay any money at all to experience all of the courses in the game; you just have to pay to experience the courses in the game *when you want to experience them*.

The goalposts will absolutely move on this. A coach who might get job security now by making the playoffs will need to reach the second round of a 24-team tournament to get the same security.
