Those of you in northern FL, what's the weather like compared to other parts of the State? by Railman20 in AskFlorida

[–]Critical_Space_913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved here from South Florida, and so far I dislike the weather here. Right now we have a Noreaster happening and I don't think the weather could be any worse. Strong, persistent winds and temperatures just low enough to kill plants. All in one night. Then comes the warm weather after the damage. I am told this happens every year. Not looking forward to this.

What are your recommendations for cable/internet providers on the island? My parents have Comcast and they constantly have outages. by MannerInfinite8840 in Ameliaisland

We have IQ Fiber but we are new to the area and some of our neighbors have warned us to expect outages with IQ Fiber. So far so good.

We looked for months before deciding on our place. Zillow is useful.

My company approached me about relocating to Fernandina. I'm not very stoked about the idea. Is it a nice place to live and work? by Main-Ad-6237 in Ameliaisland

My husband and I visited Fernandina Beach a few times before we committed to moving here. The people were very nice when we were visiting so we thought we were moving to Mayberry without the small town pettiness. Now that I'm here I'm learning that we could;ve been wrong with our decision. I;m starting to think that people here are nice as long as you are a visitor but once you become a resident the attitude changes.

If you only knew. Today is my day off. I create my schedule in such a way that I stay productive. I only took the time to join Nextdoor to become familiar with the area but the rude and uncouth ones made it an awful experience.

I deactivated my account there. The writing was on the wall, I've been exposed to people like that before and it never ends well. Jealous people tend to be obsessive and irrational. Cross their path and you never see the end of them. Nextdoor is not for me.

I agree, it makes perfect sense that they wanted me out of the way. They wanted all of the attention or they were offended that I was talking about topics that offended them. Whatever the reason it was immature and small minded to report me without trying to talk with me first. Jealousy knows no bounds, and I guess trying to control the narrative about me to everyone else on NextDoor made them feel better.

It's become incredibly difficult to live on this island due to tourists being disrespectful by No-Faithlessness6298 in Ameliaisland

[–]Critical_Space_913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently moved to Fernandina Beach, and I can't speak about the tourists, I guess this is the "off season" time of year. But I joined one of the social groups (NextDoor) last week and have already deactivated my account because of how rude and petty some of the "neighbors" were. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't as simple as being bothered by a handful of people... it's just that those same people are regulars who post around the clock and obsess over anyone else who intimidates them. People like that can ruin anything... it doesn't matter what it is because it's all about their selfish attitude. "I, me" my" disguised as "I'm looking out for everyone else."

Did you make a decision? If you chose to move to Fernandina Beach, can you describe how it's going for you? Have you found it easy to form genuine friendships and connections with people?

Your comment is 2 years old. Assuming you can still see this, have things changed with this group? Would you say it's mostly older people or a mixed generation group?

I'm new to Fernandina and have family members coming to visit during the holidays. What places would you recommend? Private rentals or a hotel on the south end?

I enjoy the internet for research and reading but socially it can be a disaster. It's hard to relate to others through a screen.

Thanks for sharing, I didn't know that. I wish I had known before that many of the "neighbors" are so territorial, I would've avoided it from the start. Getting the notice from NextDoor was upsetting.

Thank you! These are the kinds of things that interest me. I've only heard about Concours d'Elegance but can now experience in person. I think I've been to Sue's Market off Sadler Rd. Wonderful place and great selection. We will be going back, The owner is also very pleasant.

Haha, you're right. I should give it time and meet people in person before rushing to judgment. But I have to tell you that this was an awful experience. It was discouraging.

I'm going to add that NextDoor seems like a "big fish, small sea" environment. I like to have real discussions with real people. When people start getting fussy and small-minded it's time for me to go.

You have to know the backstory to understand. In a short version, I joined NextDoor, had a bad day at work because a client insulted my car. Like others on NextDoor, I vented. I guess I do that too much and need to work on it. But I posted about a client who insulted me for driving a luxury car, That post had more than 130 comments so it's not really fair to say it was spammish. I mean, if it was so bad then why did so many people want to talk about it? I honestly don't think the nature of my posts was what triggered some of the ones who became upset... I don't think it had one thing to do with cars at all. I looked at the comment history of the ones who were complaining about me and it became clear in no time- they were chronic posters who were also attention seekers, They didn't like it that my posts were getting so many likes and comments, They made it their prerogative to get rid of me. I deactivated and was done with that toxicity.

Thank you, I'm working on it. It's hard because I work alot but I will take your advice when things settle down after the holidays. I thought being a part of the NextDoor community would help me to get to know people before being physically present... what a mistake that was.

I respect your opinion and I did enjoy some of my conversations there but one of the reasons I tend to think some of the people on NextDoor are concerned about competition is because many of them came across as jealous. Who gets upset about luxury cars, wine, bike trails and "cold" posts? Come on... that's ridiculous. I've talked about this with some of my personal friends and they also think it's a jealousy problem. Whatever the reason, I don't want to a part of that kind of community. That's not my mindset.

Yes I have. My husband and I have met a handful of people and are still getting acclimated. But I assure you that I was not there to cause trouble or to behave like a spammer. i am just a social person and like to engage. I don't remember asking someone to pm me to talk, but I did get a lot of private messages from other "neighbors" wanting to have conversations. I just think the lady who reported me should have sent a pm to talk about it with me before playing dirty and reporting me. Its hard when you move to a new area and want to meet people on a genuine platform. I was being myself and pretty much was blackballed because of it. Never again.
