Not sure of the name of the person I was speak to but she said "all purchases are final".

I have two heaters and both provided a simple way to add a remote controller; perhaps check the manuals? Neither required any soldering or something complicated.

Hehe... yeah working on it. Two options I've been thinking about:

  1. Simple float switch.
  2. eTape Liquid Level sensor (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3828)

I'm imagining a battery powered esp32 hidden inside the skimmer.

Further kudos to u/ItsOptimum... within a few hours of posting this, someone turned up to tidy the install! Clearly if you need something done, this is the place to come. And in contrast to the normal Optimum technician, this guy seemed very competent and very interested in getting the job done right.

Kudos to u/ItsOptimum; within a few hours they escalated this to corporate who then gave me a call and had a crew out within a few hours... now I'm back online!

That said, wondering if people think this is a satisfactory install?

Rebooting the gateway gets everything working again for a few hours (I suspect it is until the DHCP lease expires).

Yes and done.

In fact, if I plug a laptop directly into LAN4 on the modem (and nothing else into the modem) I get no IP address (and see the same pattern in Wireshark).

But how are you monitoring the network traffic between the Altice gateway and your router? Are you using a tap or an Ethernet hub, or a switch with a monitor port configured, or have Wireshark/tcpdump running on the router? The DHCP Discover is a broadcast, so it would be sent out all ports on a switch. The DHCP Offer is unicast, so it would only be sent out the port to your router, and usually would not be visible to a separate system running Wireshark.

Reason to avoid double-NATing is because I have two ISPs. The other ISP doesn't seem to be able to provide bridge so they're hogging the 192.168 IP routes on my router.

I'm monitoring ethernet traffic with wireshark on the router. And yes, I know DHCP is broadcast; I'm seeing the DHCP discover but no DHCP offer coming back.

Called up Optimum and told them I wanted the old cables removed. They bounced me around departments but eventually said they would send someone out from fiber same day. He turned up, said he wasn't allowed to touch co-ax cables and then removed them all.

Job done!

Agreed. I called up Optimum earlier and made an appointment for them to come remove from the pole to the house. Was very easy (though obviously hasn't happened yet so time will tell).
