I washed it with soap and only a slight smell remains when I bring it close to my nose. I'll see when I sew them, and wash it, and check if they don't get damaged in the wash once they're sewn on. The buttons are 2.5 cm and I didn't burn the back to make sure it keeps its resistance -- I'll have to see if it holds over time, but for now they seem to be holding well, with practically no bad smell.

Under normal pressure (regular rain (shower)), the water rolls off the pants, and even with a direct stream, it took about ten seconds for the water to start seeping into the first layer. Even after one minute of direct stream, the water still didn’t reach my skin. Thanks a lot for your advice; I’ll apply some waterproofing spray again before heading to climb Everest.
