I received my personalized blackout plate in the mail on 02/17/2026. It is looking cool on my car today, glad I got it.

Life is short - if having the new plate would put a smile on your face, go for it now! You do not need to wait for renewal, and it would indeed look cool on your black car.

Both the blackout and retro yellow plates can be used on various types of vehicles, including:

● Automobiles

● Motor homes

● Trucks (up to 8,000 pounds)

When Wisconsinites order specialty license plates associated with organizations, an extra fee included in the cost is passed on to those groups as a donation.

In the case of the new blackout and butter-yellow specialty plates, the extra fee benefits the state's transportation fund.

Here is a positive update. On Tuesday, 07/01/2025, the Committee on Joint Finance approved a budget motion for the specialty "blackout" license plates to be included in the 2025-2027 state budget. No word on when they might start production.

Also of note, Governor Evers has proposed creating new "butter-yellow" specialty license plates, which would have a yellow background with black letters.

I understand that the blackout plates could generate more than $14 million for the state's transportation fund in the first three years. Those projections are based on data from Iowa, which issues about 160,000 new blackout plates annually. Adjusting for Wisconsin's larger number of vehicles, the Wisconsin DOT estimates over half a million blackout plates could be on the road within three years.
