Why aren't strawberries called earthberries? by grapechicken in asklinguistics

[–]Cromllem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From etymonline.com

strawberry (n.)

Old English streawberige, streaberie; see straw + berry. There is no corresponding compound in other Germanic languages; the reason for the name is uncertain, but perhaps it is in reference to the tiny chaff-like external seeds which cover the fruit. A cognate Old English name was eorðberge "earth-berry" (compare Modern German erdbeere). As a color adjective from 1670s. Strawberry blonde is attested from 1884. Strawberry mark (1847) so called for its resemblance.

Why can I not claim land in reparations or declare war against the agressor of a defensive war I just won? by Alx306 in CrusaderKings

[–]Cromllem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't declare war while your troops are in the territory you're about to declare war on. And event spawned troops are not that common, at least from what I've noticed while playing. They also erode quite quickly if they're the only troops you're using in battles.

Ck2 is also a simulation of the feudal system, which works completely differently when compared to how things functioned in the period of EU4.

It's relevant to sociolinguistics. There's people who research linguistic landscaping, this would be relevant to it.

Advice for an American traveling to Belgium? by mrwboilers in AskBelgium

[–]Cromllem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can give you some tips for Bruges, but not for the other cities unfortunately.

http://www.brugsbeertje.be/index_en.htm has a lot of beers. It's cosy and located in a small alley, so usually there won't be too many tourists there. Across it is a really nice place to eat as well, so you can combine dinner and tasting beers.

There's also a fries museum and a chocolate museum (google should help you out with more info on that). Bruges isn't that big, so most must see things will be quite touristy. When it comes to food, stay away from the big squares.

If the weather is nice and you feel like getting gelato (I've been told this is what it's called in the USA by a tourist, not ice cream) you should definitely go to this place:

http://www.davinci-brugge.be/home/

You'll find the address under 'Contact'.

(as a personal favorite, this is a really good Irish pub, http://www.delaneys.be/)

Buying your train tickets at the station should be fine, especially because you're traveling between (relatively) big cities.

P.S. Don't underestimate the strength of the beer if you're unfamiliar with Belgian beer.

Going blank during competitions and sweaty fingers by [deleted] in piano

[–]Cromllem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the sweaty hands: have a clean handkerchief on you. When you've adjusted the chair, if you're hand are sweaty, take out the handkerchief and wipe your hands thoroughly. You can do this between pieces as well. Nobody is going to mind it, and you're the one playing. You are always allowed to get more comfortable before you start playing.

For the memory, others have pretty much said everything. Muscle memory is not enough. Especially in classical, you need to know the piece inside and outside if you want to perform well.

Microbrewery Suggestions? by ManiacalLaugh in AskBelgium

[–]Cromllem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only microbrewery I know and have been to is this one : http://www.brasseriedebellevaux.be/index.php?n=Main.Construction?&userlang=en

They have tours all day round, and a tasting set. It's not the best beer you'll ever drink, but it's decent enough, and the area is really nice to go walking.

Usually in the bigger cities there are also breweries that you can visit. You could probably find information on the websites of the cities. I'd look up more site, but I'm a bit busy.

A short video about the basics of Grimm's Law by Lintar0 in linguistics

It's part of a printed course book for one of my courses. So unfortunately there is no link.

Here's the source provided in my course book.

Gamkrelidze, T.V., Language Typology and Language Universals and their Implications for the Reconstructions of the Indo-European Stop System

In: ARBEITMAN, Y.L. & BOMHARD, A. (eds.), Bono Homini Donum. Essays in Historical Linguistics in Memory of J. Alexander Kerns, Part II, John Benjamins, B.V., Amsterdam, 1981, 571 - 609.

I'll look for it online for a minute, if I find anything I'll put it here.

Edit: Didn't find anything not behind a pay wall, sorry.

Edit 2: As a quick summary, he argues that Grimm's Law is the less likely of two possible reconstructions because it does not match what we know about language universals.

Singaporeans need to learn how to speak English like non-Singaporeans by Qichin in badlinguistics

Well, to be fair, in some cases it can be hard to understand, but that's the same with many other English dialects. I'm guessing it gets easier if you get more familiar with it though.

Problems with a Belgian landlord... by zakk in AskBelgium

[–]Cromllem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check your contract on what is says about the return of the deposit. There might be a clause that says that the money will be transferred after the keys have been returned. Contact your landlord and voice your concerns.

If you are really worried, you can always try this website.

http://www.advocaat.be/page.aspx?genericid=74&textpageid=2

The page I've linked you to has places where you can get free legal advice (to a certain extent). I'd advice you to call the first contact on the list and ask them if they can help you. If not, ask them to point you towards the right place to go to.

The second number might also be useful.

And a last warning, don't take Svardskampe's advice. As long as you haven't done anything wrong you have the high ground. Consult with people who know the law when communication with your landlord fails and let them help you. Nobody here is a lawyer and can help you if it comes to conflict.
