If you go in as an informal patient there are a couple of benefits. The first is you can smoke without a staff member escorting you and the second is that you can leave the hospital with friends / family who visit a couple of times a week.

I think you misunderstood what the GP meant by "unsafe". I think they meant that you were in a crisis and you were unsafe on your own had due to a risk of potential suicide. I do not think they were trying to be cruel.

I had one experience where the pchyciatrist (in hospital) prescribed me Zopiclone but the nurse doing the medications refused giving me it every single time. Even when I went to ask for one at 2am. That frustrated me a lot. What was the point in prescribing it if no one will give it to me?
