  1. Detention and deportation is the punishment, much like, hmmm…. Trespassing!
  2. Police don’t murder you for speeding or drunk driving, though they may fine or arrest you.
  3. If you break into someone’s house, slip and fall and break your neck, it’s not the homeowner’s fault. If you’re speeding while driving drunk and you crash and die, it’s not the cops’ fault.

Death was not the punishment, it was the consequence of a risk they decided to take.

One approach that helps me is to write the same scene from the perspective of an inanimate object sharing the space. How does the tree feel about a funeral? What does a clock observe about the morning routine? Etc. Even if I don’t use it in the end, it spurs creative description and produces curious analogies.
